In Response to Malcolm X's Speech, " What Made You Hate..." (Full Version)

Written by Denise Washington

Brother Malcolm,

You taught us to
love the texture of our hair
and the color of our skin

You taught us to
love the shape of our
nose and the shape of our lips

You taught us to
love ourselves, love our own
and love our race

You taught us to
love the Black Woman
respect and and protect the Black Woman

Brother Malcolm,
You asked, "Who made us hate...?"
I answer, "The same ones
who shot you away."

on that very
cold blooded day,
February 21, 1965,

at Manhattan's
Audubon Ballroom
New York City.

The same ones
stole us away, can't really
claim our Motherland,

stripped us away
from our birthright,
name and native tongue,

turned us away,
from ourselves
and each other

lynched us away
from our culture,
religion,
legacy,

52 Years later,
your speeches still teaches us
consequential lessons for today
