A recent visit to one of the most beautiful waterfalls I've been to left me inspired. Kaaterskill falls in the Catskills is a gorgeous multi tiered falls with a swimming hole below. But what struck me most was the crowd of 30 or so people swimming at the base.
Some of the prettiest spots are the most crowded, and I thought I'd focus on that in my painting.
When Winslow Homer, one of my favorite artists, went to Mount Washington in NH, the formerly desolate site then had a growing tour industry. Paid guides led crowds of horse riding visitors to the peak. His paintings (images 2 and 3) focused on the guests crowding the trail rather than the nature itself. I used that idea as inspiration for my painting.
The falls are there, but a zig zag of visitors are wading and sun bathing in front.
