Krakow Witkin Gallery Presenting minimal, conceptually-based, and aesthetically reductivist art in all media. As is everywhere else in Massachusetts, masks are required.

The gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday, 10 - 5:30 by appointment only. In the current situation, there are limits to the number of people who can be in the gallery at any one time. Please either call in advance to schedule a visit (617-262-4490) or call upon arrival (617-262-4507) so that we can make sure your visit is as wonderful as it is safe. If you do not have one, a mask will be provided for you. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Now on view in Krakow Witkin Gallerty’s “One Wall, One Work” series is a large-scale photograph from Shirin Neshat’s 2000 cinematic and photographic work ”Fervor.”

In her trilogy of films, “Turbulent,” “Rapture,” and “Fervor,” created between 1998 and 2000, Shirin Neshat chose to present each work on two screens, in such a way that the narratives unfolded simultaneously from parallel gender perspectives. Far from uniform or static, in the films and the related photographic works, Neshat’s groups of women and men bristle with individual energies and continuously reshape themselves to form webs of interrelationships, that extend between and beyond image planes to implicate the viewer in their sensually charged dynamics.

The photograph on view, from the Fervor series, “Crowd from Front, Woman Leaving” (2000), references a culminating moment of tension in the film, when adjacent male and female audiences, separated by a black curtain, have been whipped into a frenzy by an orator’s cautionary parable about sexual desire and begin to passionately curse the devil. As the crowd’s zeal builds to a climax, a single woman stands up and walks out. The solitary woman has turned her back, clad in a full-length black chador, so that she is visible less as a figure than as a void in the crowd of women seated around her.

The simple visual device enacts at once an effacement of one woman’s presence in the moment—be it a shameful escape or perhaps a cathartic liberation—and a refocusing of the viewer’s attention to the dozens of faces still turned toward the camera. The photograph, staged separately from the film, describes this moment in the vocabulary of a painting, where the narrative plays out across the image plane rather than through movement. The elevated point of view arrays the rows of women—and the men across the divide—into a silent tableau of individual gestures, conversations, and thoughts. The rigid, public edifices of moral control and political agenda fracture into a mosaic of the sensual and the private.

Join Scott Hadfield and Krakow Witkin Gallery this Saturday, September 19, 3–5pm, at the reception for Hadfield’s solo exhibition, now on view through October 10. The event is free and open to public.

The gallery is currently exhibiting seven paintings that Hadfield has made in oil and acrylic on canvas since returning to his studio after a catastrophic fire in 2022. In each work, the process of addition not only builds density but also brings clarity: the sequence of layers remains discernible, revealing which layer was painted over which. Through both this layering and the juxtaposition of individual strokes—each defined by its position and direction—every band of color is simultaneously interrelated with and independent of those around it.

There is just one week left to see the complete “100 Boots” project by Eleanor Antin, on view through Friday, July 17.

The gallery is free and open to the public Tuesday–Friday, 10–5:30, in July.

Eleanor Antin (b. 1935, New York) conceived of the work “100 Boots” and executed it between 1971 and 1973, staging and photographing the imaginary travels of 50 pairs of military surplus boots, then printing postcards titling each episode and mailing them across the country and around the world at irregular intervals. The presentation of “100 Boots” on view at Krakow Witkin Gallery is notable for being a complete set of all 51 postcards, mailed to the same individual.

The absurdity and humor of the project was Antin’s sly response to the realities of Vietnam War-era America, within and outside artistic circles. The ranks of empty boots were an unmistakable reminder of the mass conscription of young men, but their meandering adventures also poked fun at the formal posture of conceptual art. The work is a document of performance outside of the studio setting, and its final form as a mailing engaged recipients beyond the boundaries traditionally associated with viewing art.
