Look up! The Colonial's three magnificent chandeliers are historic fixtures that have illuminated the venue for decades. 💎

These ornate chandeliers are inspired by 1900 Beaux-Arts architecture. It’s rare to see these lights hanging so low in the theatre, but once a year, they’re lowered to just inches above the Dress Circle railing for an annual cleaning.

COLONIAL THEATRE HISTORY: On August 27, 2000, SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL played its first pre-Broadway performance in Boston!

With lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, music by Stephen Flaherty, and a story co-written by both, the musical drew most of its plot from the works of Dr. Seuss. The show starred David Shiner (who was born in Boston) as The Cat in the Hat, Michele Pawk as Mayzie La Bird, and Kevin Chamberlin as Horton the Elephant. Chamberlin was nominated for the 2001 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

SEUSSICAL went on to begin performances on Broadway on November 1, 2000, where it played at the Richard Rodgers theatre until May of 2001. After its Broadway run, SEUSSICAL went on to find success in local markets through regional and community stagings and is now one of the most performed shows in America.
