Boozhoo all!

Co- director Tomantha Sylvester teamed up with the Ohketeau Cultural Center to assist in the removal of Native stereotyping and cultural appropriation in Western Massachusetts. Below, you will find the link to the petition.

"The caricature images found at Native and Himalayan Views continue to invisibilize hundreds of sovereign Nations and cultures and glorify the settler colonial action of westward expansion and manifest destiny as a way to dehumanize and erase Indigenous Peoples. Native People need to regain control over the representation of our own identities."

1. The shop is NOT Native owned/ operated/ founded
2. The shop is NOT supported by many local Native communities
3. The owner (including previous owners) have and will NOT listen to local Native voices in regards to the appalling stereotypical symbolism both inside and outside of the shop

It only takes a minute to sign and seconds to share. You can read more in the description below.

We are hoping to livestream this performance on this page around 2pm Eastern. Stay tuned for more details or just watch the live (if we have the tech to make it work).

This performance is called Gaawiin geyaabi (No More) and was inspired by the beautiful piece pictured below and our own personal experiences and stories as Indigenous Women.

We are so honored to bring this new piece to Boston and partner with Jewish Arts Collaborative and the amazingly talented Nayana Lafond.

Also, shout out to Double Edge Theatre for the generous hospitality and equipment!

We are so inspired by the piece (Zoongide’e- "To Have a Brave Heart") created by Nayana LaFond that will be presented as part of the Public Art Movement in Boston!

A bit about the sculpture:

"The sculpture for Jarts Boston and Be The Change is completed and can be seen and experienced in the Fenway Triangle of Boston on Boylston st across from Star Market and Target.
This sculpture is about Domestic Abuse. It is constructed out of rebar donated by Harris Rebar. Aluminum, stainless steel, plexiglass, concrete and more.

When you sit inside the structure you will see words and phrases in over a dozen different languages including 5 Indigenous Languages. These words are meant as a source of comfort and inspiration for those experiencing Domestic Abuse and those who survived. As well as educate and raise awareness about the over 30% of people in Massachusetts currently experiencing Domestic Abuse. On the outside are QR codes for human rights organizations, shelters, pro bono lawyers and information. People can donate, get information and seek help if it's needed."

The Anishinaabe Theater Exchange will be presenting a new work written by Colleen Medicine and Tomantha Sylvester.
