GROW Voice

GROW Voice GROW Voice is a voice and communication practice. Building your vocal presence. I have taught singing since 2002 before I even launched my performance career.

I am Gina Razon, classically-training mezzo-soprano, professional classical singer and principal teacher at GROW Voice (short bio at the bottom of this post). My passion for teaching voice stems from an essential belief. I believe in the power of the human voice, how it connects us and empowers us. For over a decade, the studio consisted primarily of singers aged 12-90. In 2013, I moved to Boston

which gave me the opportunity to rethink methodologies and what I could offer to my new community. For years, I have been struck by the many people I encounter who don’t like, or even actively hate, their voices. The voice is a primary mode of communication and still, so many people don’t feel connected to their own voice. I knew I could help and so I founded GROW Voice as a singing, and speech studio. Singers coming to studio generally understand why they want to pursue singing. I teach them solid techniques and how to access their true sound in the styles of singing that most appeal to them. While I sing classically professionally, I can and do sing Music Theatre and CCM, sometimes in the same program. My goal is always to teach this versatility to my students while teaching them to incorporate the whole body. Speakers generally know what they don’t like about how they speak but not what is possible. Some have true issues with hoarseness, lack of clarity, heavy accents and/or problems with volume. It is incredibly hard to chart your personal and professional life if you literally cannot be heard or understood. I truly believe, and the results in the studio confirm, that everyone can access a voice that is both functional and truly their own. You can love your own voice and frankly, you deserve a voice you love. Professional speakers come to the studio with different concerns, typically fatigue and overuse related. I love to expand a professional's toolbox so that the voice remains a strong and expressive delivery system for the story. I hope to see you out and about speaking and singing well. If you need some help with that, I would love to speak with you.

When we are discussing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, it often feels like diversity is what gets the most attention in organizations. As an organization, naturally you’ll want to deal with the problem that is easily identified just by glancing around the office. Understandably, from the point of view of your talent, no one wants to be the “only” representative of their group in the room....

Relationships, whether they be organizational, professional, or personal, require us to navigate power dynamics. More often than not, we are also operating with imbalances in those dynamics as we try to communicate– imbalances that we must acknowledge and understand as we interact with other humans. To that end, this is the first of two in a series about how to recognize when these dynamics are coming into play in the professional sphere (though these skills can certainly be applied in other parts of your life)....

Confession time. I do not like writing about public speaking anxiety. The subject is over-saturated drowning good advice in a sea of recycled aphorisms. Still, every few years I wade back in and here we are. It is, in my honest opinion, a failing of our societal culture that we ignore the function of the body so often and so completely....

I was chatting with a friend this morning about a pair of speakers she heard recently. Both had less than common, potentially hard to pronounce names. One of these women, acknowledged the difficulty and broke it down for the audience leaving everyone clear and empowered on how to address her. The other woman, rushed through requiring my friend to later look her up to get her name right....

In the Buddhist teaching, Upajjhatthana Sutta, there are five remembrances for contemplation. The one I reflect on the most, by far, was best paraphrased by the late Thich Nhat Hanh: My Actions are my only true belongings. They are the ground upon which I stand. Thich Nhat Hanh (1926-2022) It is a good thing to keep front of mind for a quality existence....

Power, personal power specifically, is often defined as the ability to influence people and events. I don't disagree but the definition lacks a core. Power is not a veneer, it is not a lever or a conduit. What it is, is pure voltage because electricity is the core language of your body. This is where the languages we speak fail us a bit but bear with me....
