Grammy-winning composer Herschel Garfein's Valediction and Screed (Against the Oligarchy) for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra will see its world premiere at the Bach, Beethoven, & Brahms Society of Boston's March 1st concert at United Parish in Brookline!

In the composer's own words, "the first movement, Valediction, is an elegy to an old friend, Don Lipsitt, who passed away a few years ago. Don was a warm and loving man, a giant in the field of psychiatry, a passionate music lover and a passionate participant in the struggle to uphold democratic values in the US.

The second movement Screed (Against the Oligarchy) is a defiant outburst against the oligarchy that is daily destroying our country."

Swipe to hear saxophonist Kenneth Radnofsky play an excerpt of this smoky, sultry piece that weaves musical motifs from the 1932 classic "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" by Jay Hornet and Yip Harburg.

Tickets to the March 1st concert are available now at bbbsociety.org/tickets!

Lili Boulanger was an early-20th century French composer and the first woman to win the Prix de Rome prize for music composition (Claude Debussy, one of Boulanger’s musical influences, won the same prize a few decades prior). Boulanger’s final completed work was Pie Jesu, and it was dedicated to her sister, legendary music teacher and composer Nadia Boulanger.

You can hear Lili Boulanger’s Pie Jesu along with works by Bach, Barber, Frazin, & more on November 16th at United Parish in Brookline! Tickets available at bbbsociety.org/tickets

One of the most famous and beloved classical pieces of the past century, Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings premiered on an NBC radio broadcast in 1938 under conductor Arturo Toscanini. It was originally written as the second movement for Barber’s String Quartet, Op. 11 and adapted for concert orchestra specifically for Toscanini. Entrancing and poignant, it remains one of the most important pieces of American classical music and was played at the funerals of Franklin Roosevelt, Albert Einstein and after the death of John F. Kennedy.

Hear Barber’s masterpiece at the Bach, Beethoven, & Brahms Society of Boston’s November 16th concert at United Parish in Brookline on a program featuring works by Bach, Barber, Lili Boulanger, Howard Frazin, & more! Tickets available at bbbsociety.org/tickets
