Charlotte A. Mitchell High School, formerly Bossier City Colored High School, served Black students in Bossier City from 1941 through its final graduating class of 1969.
Charlotte Mitchell, the school's namesake, was an overwhelming influence not only in lives of her students, but throughout her community. As a teacher she dedicated decades of her life to education, while also overseeing canning operations in the community and leading the Colored Home Demonstration Clubs. She retired as the Bossier Parish's Jeanes Supervisor in 1937, though she continued to teach for a few more years.
The site of the former Charlotte A. Mitchell high school continues to serve as a community center, including a food pantry, and a neighborhood park.
Come to the East Bank Arts Building at 630 Barksdale Blvd. to see this sweater, on loan from the Bossier Parish Libraries History Center, that belonged to John Lee Stafford. In his time at Charlotte A. Mitchell High School, he played football, sang in the choir, and played tuba in the band!
