Ako Castuera’s Water Finds a Body is a material meditation on water and kinship, nestled along a path in Galleta Meadows just outside the center of Borrego Springs. Fibers twined into cordage by the artist and workshop participants circle the vessels, recalling water seeking roots - a prticularly poignant sight in the desert. Seek it out and stay a while - on view 24/7 through April 5 🌴💧

On March 7, Gerald Clarke, with the help of his cousins, family, and friends, inaugurated his new public sculpture “Desert Dance” with Cahuilla bird song and dance, on their people’s ancestral land in Borrego Springs. They shared many songs and stories, and the dancers skirts waved in the wind along with the sculptures. Thank you to Gerald and his family for such a beautiful afternoon and thanks to all of you who joined us for this special moment. If you missed the singing and dancing, don’t worry - you still have time to see this sculpture on the Galleta Meadows and all the other Candlewood art projects throughout Borrego Springs until April 5. Swipe through for the location starred on the map ⭐️

Spotlight on Star Montana, Candlewood artist and the extraordinary leader of our education program at Borrego Springs High School - come see her students’ work on Saturday from 4-7pm at the 2nd floor of the Mall and see her new video projected under the stars at the amphitheater behind the library at 7pm. And see her work in A Tender Excavation at the Luckman Gallery at Cal State LA until March 13 ⭐️🌟✨⭐️

Get • Star Montana’s photography reflects her family history through newly authored images and the repurposing of her family’s archive of personal photos.

“Louisa, Cathy, and Little Star” is a photograph of Montana’s mother, aunt, and the artist as a toddler. Many photos from her family archive have deteriorated through time or have suffered accidental water damage from home water leaks or flooding. The distorted effect of the water damage eerily highlights her matriarchs and obscures the fallen men in her family, becoming a metaphor for the fragmented histories and memories transmitted to her. These family photographs eventually replace and become memories themselves, and reimagine lost time as part of the continuous cycle of life.

Montana’s work is featured in LACE’s group exhibition, “A Tender Excavation,” on view at The Luckman Gallery until next Friday, March 13, 2026 and at from April 10–July 12, 2026.
