Get • Star Montana’s photography reflects her family history through newly authored images and the repurposing of her family’s archive of personal photos.
“Louisa, Cathy, and Little Star” is a photograph of Montana’s mother, aunt, and the artist as a toddler. Many photos from her family archive have deteriorated through time or have suffered accidental water damage from home water leaks or flooding. The distorted effect of the water damage eerily highlights her matriarchs and obscures the fallen men in her family, becoming a metaphor for the fragmented histories and memories transmitted to her. These family photographs eventually replace and become memories themselves, and reimagine lost time as part of the continuous cycle of life.
Montana’s work is featured in LACE’s group exhibition, “A Tender Excavation,” on view at The Luckman Gallery until next Friday, March 13, 2026 and at from April 10–July 12, 2026.
