W.B. Patton, a vaudeville comedian, playwright, and actor, brought his popular comedy-drama, “The Minister's Son,” to our stage. In the early 1900s, Patton was well known for his unique and wholesome sense of humor.

When Patton performed to a full house, our venue was known as Stephens Opera House, having just been modernized in 1901. His tour was among the first national acts to enjoy the new horseshoe balcony and sloped main floor.

Today, our theatre company is proud to continue the creative tradition in this legendary space.

As we explore the archives at Thespian Hall to prepare for our debut season, we uncover the work of a range of fascinating theatre makers throughout time.

Mr. W.W. Heathcote was a traveling dramatic actor, elocutionist, and director who toured the Midwest in the late 1880s and 1890s. This beautifully preserved playbill from Monday, September 7, 1896, shows him in our venue leading his ensemble of local pupils in the mythological comedy Pygmalion and Galatea. On this night, he not only directed but also double-cast himself as Chrysos and Pygmalion!

We are deeply inspired by the hustle, passion, and legacy of the theatre makers who built the foundation of this hall. A brand-new chapter of storytelling is about to begin on this exact stage.
