For those in western NC, where I am, it isn't a time for posting pretty photos. And FB is already replete with horrifyingly graphic depictions of Helene's destruction--no more of those would help anything or anyone.

Thanks to all who are working hard to help the NC mountain communities recover, whether they're toiling in official or unofficial/volunteer capacities. I am far more fortunate than many/most, enduring only the inconvenience of an extended lack of electricity, water, communications, internet--seven-plus days now. Far more have it far worse than do my immediate neighbors and I. (I can and have, several times, made it to Boone for access to those missing services. That's where I am while posting this.)

Looking forward to brighter days.

I've seen literally thousands of wonderful photos from the April 8 total solar eclipse. I'm always amazed at and envious of how quickly many photographers are able to edit their photos. I'm a plodder when it comes to editing, especially when there are numerous versions of the same subject. I'm getting there with my 900-odd eclipse images shot in Henderson, KY. Even though the eclipse is already old news, I will post a few favorites sometime soon.

Lazy and placid in NC, the New River takes on a different character in WV. This is Sandstone Falls, generally considered the beginning point of the New River Gorge. For scale, note the fisherman lower right and the hiker upper right.

I read somewhere that today is international beaver day . . . who knew beavers had a "day," particularly an international one? Oh well, why not a day for nature's engineers?

This guy was at Bass Lake a few years back. Counting the tail, he/she/it was between three and four feet long. This sighting was quite a surprise to me as I wasn't aware we have beavers in this area. And maybe we really don't . . . I saw this one a couple times, then none thereafter; perhaps it was only passing through.

March 13 . . . while Grandfather's reclining profile was partially hidden by cloud, the craggy, upright profile of his "chin" (the same up close view available from the Profile Trail, except from the other side) was still visible. Higher reaches of the mountain lightly coated in snow, lower slopes beginning to show early spring color . . .
