Like a hammer to a carpenter or ball to an athlete, from the time Ryan Kirby first picked up a paintbrush, there was no question what his craft would be. And once old enough to venture deep into the woods of the family farm, his subject quickly became wild things. Wild animals. It takes a trained eye to recreate the way sunlight bounces off a deer antler, or to perfectly place a thousand feathers

as a tom turkey lunges forward into a thunderous gobble. For Kirby, the training takes place on his hunting adventures – each morning in the field used as a time to watch, listen and learn. From the wilds of Alaska, to the Rocky Mountains, to the Heartland of his home state of Illinois, Kirby has traveled far and wide to see fur, feathers, trees and water differently than the rest of us…and the same. The same adrenaline that’s pulsed through the veins of hunters for generations is what makes Kirby tick. Only his purpose for being there is a different. He is an artist - charged by God to preserve on canvas His wild places and wild things. There’s a spiritual connection between the brush, the animal and the scene. Through Kirby’s hand, moments in time are captured forever – to be relived by those who gaze upon the canvas. Maybe you’ve been here before. Or maybe you long to see these sights and sounds for yourself. Either way, Ryan Kirby’s art is painted for you.

Can you see what changed in these two images??

When I paint, I choose a canvas size based on the composition, the subject, and what I personally want to create as an artist. But sometimes the dimensions I choose for an original oil painting at don't translate well to a publication or product. "Gone with the Wind" is a great piece and I love the 40"x20" horizontal canvas - it makes a statement when hung in a room. But I needed to resize this for the 8.5"x11" NC Wildlife calendar, and they're not resizing the calendar to fit my work in! 😉 Simply cropping the piece cut the lead doe in half, and looks weird. So I fell back on my photoshop experience and manually recreated the composition in a way retains the feel of the original and keeps enough margin around the deer to where they don't feel cramped.

"Moment of Beauty" is an original oil painting from this past year. We've got some great weather this weekend in the mountains of Western NC, and it got me thinking about this piece. If you're wading a cool mountain stream this weekend with a fly rod, good luck. 👊

I just got my signed diecast back from the winning car at Richmond featuring “Turn and Burn” on the side. It got me thinking about some of the mementos I’ve collected over the years from past projects. Thought some of you might enjoy a peek into my studio, so here you go.

A whitetail buck’s antler pedicles may be the most unique bone structure in the deer woods. These permanent structures at the base of the skull regenerate an entirely new set of antlers every year — one of the most remarkable examples of tissue regeneration in mammals. During summer growth, the cells inside the pedicle divide at rates that resemble tumor growth, yet remain highly regulated by the buck’s body. Without healthy pedicles, there are no healthy antlers.

Right now, across much of turkey country, this year’s poults are hitting the ground. It’s one of the most important — and vulnerable — stages in a wild turkey’s life. From cold rain and predators to insects and brood habitat, the next few weeks will determine how many of these young birds survive to become the next generation of spring gobblers and loudmouth hens. 🦃
