Doc Watson Day is always a great time here in Boone, but this year's concert at the Jones House was one that seemed extra special. 🧡 Thank you to all the staff, volunteers, and musicians - along with the incredible crowd of community members and visitors - who came together to make this such an incredible celebration!

Doc Watson, a 7-time Grammy Award winner, lived in Deep Gap, NC, and was a frequent visitor to downtown Boone and the Jones House during his lifetime. A musical legend, Doc inspired generations of musicians during his lifetime with his flat-picking style. Blind since childhood, Doc wished to be remembered first as a member of the community, a husband, a father, and a grandfather.

On Friday, June 24, 2011, a life-sized bronze statue of Doc, designed by Alex Hallmark, was unveiled in downtown Boone, on the corner of W. King St. and N. Depot St. When asked about the idea of a statue of his likeness being installed in downtown Boone, Doc said it would be okay, as long as a plaque accompanied it, reading, "Just one of the people."

On the day the statue was unveiled, the Town of Boone decreed that Doc Watson Day would be an annual town celebration. Ever since that day, Boone and the Jones House have celebrated his memory and influence with a free concert on the Jones House lawn.

Join us for live music, starting at 5:00pm. Bring your own blankets, chairs, and snacks, and find a space on the lawn.

It's Doc Watson Day and we were excited to have WBT Radio and Good Morning BT live on the Jones House front porch. Watauga County native Olivia Phillips had a chance to close out the show with a song. Be sure to catch her again this afternoon, with live music on the lawn starting at 5pm.

Doc Watson Day celebrations are here!! --August 14-15, 2026--

Kick things off with the annual Doc Watson Day concert at the Jones House on Friday, with music beginning at 5pm. Enjoy a free concert on the lawn from some of those who have followed in Doc's footsteps:
-Eliot Smith & Noah Lanham
-Olivia Phillips
-Trevor McKenzie & Steve Kruger
-Nick Chandler and Delivered

Then, on Saturday at 2pm, head over to the Appalachian Theatre community room for a free screening of "Doc Watson - One of the People." Boone-native Elias Shack produced this documentary that tells the story of the legendary musician's humble rise to fame, as well as the history of the bluegrass and oldtime genres he made such a large impact upon.

The celebration closes out Saturday evening with a sold-out concert at the Appalachian Theatre, featuring one of the modern era's most accomplished and versatile guitarists, Tommy Emmanuel, CGP.
