"The little girl still held her hand.
Lady Carter squeezed it gently.
“Off with you.”
The children scattered as quickly as they arrived, their voices following them down the street.
Lady Carter remained where she was for a moment.
Aurora.
An only child.
A princess somewhere beyond Hambleton whom people already whispered might someday be asked to repair what her mother damaged.
Lady Carter knew nothing of the girl beyond what reached the Duchy in fragments."

"There had been a time when Lady Carter imagined children running through the halls of the Manor. Muddy shoes abandoned where they did not belong. Small voices calling from rooms meant to be quiet. The Duke pretending irritation at interruptions he secretly welcomed.

That life never came.

Time eventually made certain it never would.
Lady Carter learned to carry the absence without allowing it to become bitterness.

Hambleton helped.

Its children scraped their knees, tore their clothing, quarreled, wandered, grew hungry, became ill, ignored their parents, and occasionally required correction from whichever responsible adult happened to be nearest.

Lady Carter considered herself qualified."
