A little warmup. I’ve been out of the studio for a while and needed something quick to get the arm-brain connection flowing again, so I snapped a photo of this view on my way in.

I didn’t intend to take a months-long break from painting, but that’s what happened. Life has just been busy and I felt called to let my attention rest on other things for a while. I’ve missed my studio, but am content knowing it’s all here waiting for me. We have seasons, and that’s okay.

I am, however, fortunate to have a large commission to keep me busy in the coming weeks so I’ll hopefully have some more art to share. Hope you’re well, whoever’s reading this. ❤️

This is a favorite of mine that came about in the pre-market scramble. There’s 3 different paintings beneath this one. Sometimes it takes a while.

I painted this little point of the bay from the shore, after trying to sketch it from a paddle board which was, expectedly, difficult. It was the first day of my solo trip into Montana, and I was feeling lonely, wishing my family was there enjoying the water with me.

It’s market time! Thank you to everyone who has stopped by so far, purchased art, shared kind encouraging words, brought me coffee (.fineart !!), traveled all the way from Tacoma to see my work??!! It’s hard to be vulnerable; thank you to my collectors for being a soft place to land.

I’ve officially painted all I can in prep for the Arts & Crafts Festival this weekend, ending with this alla prima portrait of my cats as a de-stresser. Looking forward to having a good time, and then not having to think about it anymore!

A little moment in a developing painting I feel good about.

In looking over the lineup of paintings I’m planning on bringing to the next art market I feel a mix of emotions. Proud, to be making work and to see evidence of what I consider progress; frustrated at the inconsistency, that I’m still not able to really pin down a subject or style or method. Each piece of work seems to have come from different parts of my brain or personality and look like they could have been made by completely different people, and I’m anxious over what that means. It’s actually quite a good visual representation of my inner experience, and I feel so exposed by my own art. It is what it is, and the only thing I can think to do is just keep trucking and hope some good comes out of it along the way.

Here’s another Montana sketch. This one was done outside of Butte as the day was winding down. I was trying desperately to put down some of the subtle color variations I saw before the light changed too much. Didn’t quite manage it; in fact, nothing I painted on this trip did any real justice to what was observed in the landscape, but sometimes the art is in the trying. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself.

Spent part of a morning in Missoula balancing on rocks by the river, getting a wicked sunburn trying to paint this bridge. And then I scratched it in transit.

I took a brief detour last week to spend some time painting in western Montana, but now I’m back at home and refocusing on preparing for the Arts & Crafts Fest. May or may not be bringing still-wet paintings again this year. (Hopefully not, probably yes.)
