Attention Southwest Florida Residents!!!

As a professional with extensive experience in disaster management and a lifelong resident of Southwest Florida, I feel a deep responsibility to share some critical information regarding Hurricane Milton. I know this can be overwhelming, and I understand the anxiety many of you may be feeling. However, we must act quickly and decisively to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

Hurricane Milton will bring challenges that are different, yet similar, to what we experienced with Hurricane Ian. If you live west of US-41 or near any lakes or waterways, it is crucial that you begin preparing your home now. Please take the following steps to safeguard your property and, most importantly, your safety:

Move everything above ground level – Elevate valuables, electronics, and important documents.
Unplug electrical items and turn off your breaker – This is vital to protect your home from electrical hazards.
Find alternative shelter – If you’re in a flood-prone area, please plan to relocate to a safer location inland. Staying in your home if you’re at risk is simply not safe for this storm.
Why This Is So Important
Our region is already dealing with waterlogged soil from recent rains, meaning even a small surge or additional rainfall could result in dangerous flooding. I’ve seen firsthand the damage this can cause, such as during Hurricane Isaac in Pasco County. Areas that you wouldn’t typically consider vulnerable can flood quickly under these conditions.

If you are:

Near a lake or waterway – Take immediate steps to protect your home from rising water.
In a low-lying area – Be proactive in protecting your property now. The water levels will rise.
We saw minimal surge cause unexpected flooding during Hurricane Helene, and given the saturated ground conditions, Hurricane Milton could be even more impactful. Don’t wait until the last minute.

What You Need to Do Right Now
Evacuate today if you can – Head out of state or to a high, dry area inland if possible. Don’t wait until the last minute.
Seek higher ground – If leaving the area isn’t an option, find a friend or relative in a safer, elevated location.
Prepare today, not tomorrow – Remember how congested the roads became during Hurricane Irma’s evacuations. We have over 48 hours to make smart decisions—don’t delay, or you risk getting caught in gridlock.
What to Expect
The eye is projected to pass north of us, which guarantees we’ll experience some level of storm surge and flash flooding. Even if your home has never flooded before, please don’t underestimate the situation. Take every precaution, because this storm has the potential to impact unexpected areas.

Join Us in Helping the Community
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please leave a comment. We plan on organizing water rescues using jet skis and providing land-based assistance, just like we did during Hurricane Ian. Your help could make all the difference. Someone reading these comments might be the very person who needs assistance, and that’s why it’s so important for us to come together as a community to support one another.

Take Care of Each Other
I’ll be available for a Live Chat soon to discuss this further and answer any questions. This isn’t just about protecting your property—it’s about keeping your family safe. Please don’t panic, but do take this seriously. We have a small window of time to prepare, and every minute counts.

I’m urging all of you to stay vigilant, stay safe, and do not underestimate Hurricane Milton. We’re a resilient community, and if we prepare now, we’ll get through this together.

"Every great journey begins with a single step. Start your leadership transformation today!"

Identify your leadership style by asking for feedback from your peers. Use this feedback to experiment with new approaches and improve your leadership skills. This is the start of being an adaptive leader, understanding the one leadership style does not inspire every follower the same.

Money does not equate to leadership. To test this, inquire if employees feel their boss genuinely cares for them. Often, those with wealth may lose sight of a crucial aspect of leadership: it's all about the people. Without dedicating time to connect with your team, you're merely managing, not leading.

When was the last time you conducted a survey to allow your people to speak freely to really test the climate of your workplace which you lead. No names, No recourse, just an honest and open survey.

Understanding those you aim to lead is fundamental. Without this knowledge, you cannot effectively lead, and managers who are unaware of what motivates their team are simply managing expectations, not inspiring growth.

However, the challenge arises in expanding a business or organization when time is scarce and personal interaction with every employee is not feasible.

Consider the following stages from John Maxwell as the building blocks of leadership:

Stage 1: Position - As the boss, compliance is expected, or else termination ensues. Here, a manager and a leader will diverge in their approach.

Stage 2: Permission - Relationships are cultivated, and employees choose to follow their leader's guidance.

Stage 3: Production - Tangible results emerge, such as improved morale, reduced absenteeism, and enhanced productivity, which positively impact the financial bottom line.

Stage 4: People Development - The focus shifts to transforming supervisors into leaders, ensuring that employees continue to feel valued even in the boss's absence. This phase also involves teaching leadership skills to the employees themselves.

Stage 5: Pinnacle - A stage seldom reached, requiring a lifetime of dedication to people. It's the phase where the leaders you've nurtured begin to steer the organization.

These stages form the pyramid of a robust leadership foundation, where each level must be mastered before advancing.
