In December 1984, thick Arctic ice trapped about 3,000 beluga whales in the Chukchi Sea. With no way to reach open water, they risked dying as their breathing holes froze over. The USA, Russia, Canada, and Japan joined forces, sending an icebreaker to cut a path through the ice.

At first, the whales wouldn’t follow the ship. Then the crew tried something unusual... they played classical music through loudspeakers. Curious, the whales gathered and began swimming behind the icebreaker. For almost 100 miles, the ship led them through the icy channel until they reached safety.

About 2,000 whales survived. The rescue, called Operation Beluga, became famous as a rare moment of teamwork between nations.

If nations can join to save whales, imagine what they could do if they worked together for each other.
