A mule, a sorghum mill, and a community willing to pitch in. That’s how a Wewoka tradition began! 🍂

Featured in the Sunday, October 4, 2026, edition of The Seminole Producer, this “50 Years Ago” article looks back at Wewoka’s first “Sorghum Day” at the Seminole Nation Museum. Neighbors helped feed the cane into the mill, local agriculture students helped grow and harvest it, and fresh sorghum syrup sold for $8 a gallon!

What began with those shared efforts has become a tradition that brings families, friends, and visitors together year after year. We’re grateful for the people who started it and the generations of volunteers who have kept it going. ❤️

As we prepare for the 51st Annual Wewoka Sorghum Festival on October 24, we’d love to hear your memories. What’s your earliest memory of the Sorghum Festival? Share it in the comments!
