Exploring Boise’s Basque history! 😄

Sharon Fisher writes, "Many American cities have neighborhoods dedicated to and honoring different ethnic groups, but Boise is just about the only one to have such an area designated for the Basque culture. Basques come from the Pyrenees region bordering Spain and France. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, three million people of Basque descent still live in the region, while several hundred thousand live elsewhere in the world. The organization notes that Boise, Idaho, has the highest concentration of people of Basque outside the Pyrenees (a total of about 16,000)"! 🙌

Join us August 6 and August 29 for our ArchWalks! 🏛 This month, we'll join Richard Jarvis, serving as the Senior Historic Preservation planner for the City of Boise, in a tour amongst the mercantile buildings just west of the main downtown core.

This area is very architecturally significant for its early 20th-century designs and boasts many structures by notable Idaho architects. From Romanesque Revival to Chateauesque, we’ve got pretty much all the commercial architectural styles of the early 20th. There’s even a modernist gem or two in the mix. 👀

🎟 Get your tickets here: preservationidaho.org/archwalks2024 - $10.00 for Preservation Idaho members and $12.00 for non-members (credit card processing fees apply).

Happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸 Celebrate the River Street Neighborhood Project, highlighted in Priya Chhaya's article at the National Trust for Historic Preservation:

Fourth of July with Stories from Across the United States

"Just under 250 years ago, a group of men gathered on a hot day in Philadelphia to declare the separation of thirteen colonies from Britain and its King in order to create what would become, as the United States Constitution would say in 1789, "a more perfect Union."

Today, we recognize that the story of that Union is not made up of a single narrative arc. Rather it is a collection of histories not limited to a grand National narrative, but one that is filled with individuals and communities who fought for the United States to live up its ideals. That history is complicated, it is intersectional and at times painful, celebratory, and hopeful all at once. Telling those stories, the full American story, is an essential part of our civic culture.
This fourth of July, explore stories from every single state, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, and Guam, unfurling the rich and complicated tapestry of the American past while also sharing how people are working to preserve the places that make us who we are."

📣 PUBLIC INPUT NEEDED FOR THE STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION PLAN UPDATE

The Idaho State Historic Preservation Office needs YOUR assistance! The Idaho Historic Preservation Plan (IHPP) is being updated and it's crucial to hear from a diverse range of perspectives. Your feedback will help guide the future of historic preservation across Idaho, ensuring a balanced and effective approach to safeguarding our heritage. The plan identifies priorities for historic preservation activities throughout Idaho.

The plan was last updated eight years ago, and since that time the population of Idaho has grown by over 250,000. With Idaho’s population increasing significantly, it's more important than ever to gather wide-ranging input.

The public is invited to participate by taking the survey and by attending open houses to be held around the state. Whether you’re a history buff, a resident of a historic district, or someone who values Idaho's cultural landscapes, they want to hear from you.

Please take a few moments to fill out the survey here: https://forms.gle/sYtfiKjsHwpTXVqd7

Interested in more involvement? Attend an open house near you! Details on locations and dates can be found here: https://history.idaho.gov/hp-plan-update/

We’re hoping that you will take this survey to help shape the future of historic preservation in Idaho. Together, we can help shape a preservation plan that reflects our shared values and history.
