Many but One Performing Arts
Theatre Arts Course Descriptions

The objective for Theatre Arts Courses at Many but One is to make students effective communicators who can bring to life relatable stories of creation, fall and redemption both onstage and in personal interactions. Instruction will focus on how to glorify God with their body, voice and imagination. Students will be able to recognize an

d empathize with humanity, ultimately using their communication skills to
minister to others or to defend their faith. Elementary Theatre (K-2 or 2-5)
Elementary students in theatre class explore their world through use of imagination and creative dramatics. In a very non-threatening setting, students role-play and re-tell stories based on class experiences with high-quality children's literature including poetry and prose, while learning the fundamentals of structured storytelling in terms of sequenced events and a sense of beginning, middle, and end. Students develop language skills and extend their vocabulary as they explore characterization. Students will independently be able to use their learning to critically think or reflect as well as exhibit skills, techniques or processes. They will examine the use of innovation, technology, and 21st century skills and discern whether the art honors God. Each class includes a music portion where students are taught the fundamentals of vocal technique. This class will include a field trip to a professional theatrical performance and workshop. Introduction to Theatre – Middle and High School Students
This course promotes enjoyment and appreciation for all aspects of theatre, and it enables students to develop fundamental skills in the multiple elements of theatre as a collaborative art form. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of artistic discipline, ensemble ethic, theatre terminology, pantomime, improvisation, theatre history, voice and relaxation, script analysis, basic characterization, scene work, music and vocal techniques, performance and technical theatre. All students are encouraged to be enrolled in a dance or movement class as well as vocal training. This class will include a field trip to a professional theatrical performance and workshop.

Comprehensive Theatre – Middle and High School students
Placement by Audition or Teacher recommendation. All students must be enrolled in a dance or movement class. The purpose of this course is to enable serious theatre students to create and synthesize advanced elements of theatre arts into final productions using a wide variety of media, technical elements, genres and processes. This course will focus on the organization and implementation of Cornerstone Theatre Company with special emphasis and instruction in theatrical production and management, directing and performance, theory and technique, and the use of these practices in a ministerial and/or mission setting. Because of its advanced structure, Comprehensive Theatre is designed for students with significant experience in theatre, and promotes depth of engagement and lifelong appreciation for theatre through a broad spectrum of teacher-assigned and self-directed study and performance. Students will regularly reflect on aesthetics and issues related to and addressed through theatre, and create within various aspects of theatre in ways that are progressively more innovative. In keeping with the rigor expected in an accelerated setting, students will assemble a portfolio that showcases a significant body of work representing personal vision and artistic growth over time; mastery of theatre skills and techniques in one or more areas; and evidence of significant oral and written analytical and problem-solving skills based on their structural, historical, and cultural knowledge. Students will receive some group vocal instruction and are strongly encouraged to enroll in private vocal instruction. Students may be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the scheduled class to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom. Students will produce a One-Act play complete with sets, costumes and technical support. They will attend at least one professional performance and workshop together as a class. They will identify and use innovation, technology, and 21st century skills. Students will view secular art and see it through the eyes of the one who is redeemed by Christ, and discern whether the art honors God. 90 minutes plus extra rehearsals and work at home. Production Performance - all ages
All students will have the opportunity to audition for a role in a major theatrical production. Involvement in this production will be independant from the regular weekly classes and will take place in the spring of 2017. The title of this production will be announced in the the Winter of 2016 and a very clear and specific rehearsal schedule will be provided. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a lead, supporting, ensemble or tech role. A student’s role will be reflected in the pricing and scheduling. Beginning Sewing - 5 grade and above (I’d like to limit to 5-6 students)
This basic, 8 week sewing class will teach fundamental skills of sewing with a machine and by hand. Students will learn to thread a needle, make a knot, hem and sew on buttons as well as elastic and ribbons for dance shoes. They will then advance to learning to thread a machine and fill a bobbin, examine and use different types of stitches, follow a pattern, set in a zipper, and make a buttonhole. A simple project will be completed by the end of the class.
