A decades-long promise is moving closer to reality.

The U.S. Department of Justice and Department of the Interior have announced plans to transfer more than 45,000 acres of Arizona land into trust for the Hopi Tribe, marking the second major step in an effort that could ultimately unite over 270,000 acres for the Tribe’s benefit.

The transfer is being carried out under the Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute Settlement Act of 1996, legislation designed to resolve long-standing land issues and create more unified ownership of lands important to the Hopi people.

According to the Justice Department, the lands will support ranching, agriculture, and future economic opportunities while strengthening the Tribe’s ability to manage and steward its own resources. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Hopi Chairman Lamar B. Keevama both described the moment as historic.

For the Hopi people, this is more than a land transaction.

It is another chapter in a story of perseverance, sovereignty, and caring for lands that hold both cultural and economic significance.

What does land stewardship mean to you and your community?
