I’m currently making 100 arrangements in the flower shop for a massive university gala, catching up on my podcasts while I slice stems & bust tail. A dear friend texted me this morning about this episode of Off Mic, Off the Record, something special I should hear. 🖤
As I listen to Aaron Lee Bentley’s podcast (someone I’d call a business associate & now friend since my Texas Music Pickers days), I found myself nodding my head & agreeing with lots of what was discussed. Highly regarded music journalist Brad of Galleywinter spoke about what’s next in the industry for artists & critics with Aaron— & somehow, someway they brought me up as the new wave of music journalism.
As a full time business owner, I feel like balancing time between this blog & the shop is a constant seesaw. But one thing is for certain, I am ALWAYS taking in music fully. I am always listening to new releases, making notes for new articles. Music was my first true love, & one I’m constantly falling for. In the podcast, they talked about how I do things a little different, my own way. (not me literally crying right now *sniffles*!!!) & that’s the only way I hope to be. I get my content in (pics/reels) but am fully present in the song, in the lyrics, in the sound. I get to hear & see something superior & want to share with you readers & watchers the feelings that take over the crowd.
All this to say, I needed this today. I always write for me, not for validation, but I ain’t gonna lie— feels pretty dang good when you get it! Especially from Texas Music heroes of mine. I’ve read Galleywinter articles for what feels like my whole life, & it’s shaped the way I share music. I haven’t met Brad, but I sure know him 😂 was even too scared to say hi during Mile 0 regardless if he stood right behind me on the rail the entire time hahah. & it’s so cool & a little scary that he knows ME!
I’m thankful for people like Kim Brian & Aaron who say my name in important spaces, & for music enthusiasts like Brad who paved the way for writers like me. These kind of interactions are what makes the Texas music industry such a beloved place & I’m eternally grateful. Go check out this podcast now!
