If you love bats like we do, here's a few tips to attract more bats to your yard:

🪰 Plant a bat garden. Many bats eat night-flying insects, so you’ll want to plant flowers that either stay open through the night or bloom through the evening.
🌸 For a tasty, long-lasting buffet, choose 2-3 plants that bloom in spring, summer, and fall.
🌱 Use native plants that match your region and site conditions, as they have evolved to attract native insects. Remember: native plants attract native insects that in turn provide bat food!
🪵 For many bat species, dead trees are a comfy place to call home!
🛖 Bat house curious? Bat houses are complicated to get right, and can even harm bats if installed incorrectly. thoughtful construction and placement can increase their chances of being occupied.

Before there were weather apps, there was the pinecone.

The scales aren't decoration — they're built to protect the seeds inside. In dry air the scales dry out and pull open, so the wind can carry the seeds far. When damp air moves in ahead of rain, the outer side of each scale swells, and the whole cone quietly pulls itself shut. No nerves, no muscles — just wood doing physics.

That's why an open cone on the path means settled weather, and a tightly closed one means moisture is on the move. The cone doesn't predict the rain so much as it feels the damp arriving before you do.

Pick one up tonight and set it on the porch rail. Check it in the morning against the sky. It's been the cheapest weather station in the almanac for a few hundred years — and it still works.

The Little Stone Buddha

We ended our day with a read aloud of Grace Lin’s THE LITTLE STONE BUDDHA. Loved the way the kids consumed this one. They were captivated. This one will be a huge hit with classroom teachers and young readers.
