Excess Space is an art organ housed in the small barn off Grant St. Excess not only serves as a nex(ha)us for performance, multimedia, installation and visual art exhibition (a gallery) but also as a hub for circulating skills and techniques (community workshops), in order to provide theater and means for the decanting of tigers of feeling

. Excess's mission is to address the paradox of utility by amassing cultural alternatives to the commercial and academic art experience, and in this economy reflect back to negate and to re-envision artistic expression and elements, and to nurture and promote “the tiger in space” in Bloomington. Programming at Excess will be a varied collection of afternoon and evening happenings and exhibitions that involve audience, participation and their reversals. It will also offer several workshops and demonstrations that will continue the mission and allow community engagement in a wide range of creative activities. Monday through Friday will have regular afternoons of open gallery hours, and there will be weekly special events such as poetry and fiction nights, creative skill shares, reading groups, film screenings as well as both local and touring musical performances. We hope that Excess will become a base to utilize, enjoy, (re)learn, and deconstruct. The space will operate through creative programming, promotion, continuing membership and community participation under the banner ‘The infinite does not transcend the finite; rather, it is the very movement of the finite itself.’

To utilize Excess Space, please email, tweet, pm or come by on Sundays at 6pm

Please consider supporting this project so it can get off the ground. Also, if your organization or group wants to be involved in the space- please let us know! Thanks so much to all of those who have already shown their support.

It was the late 1960s in Bloomington, a story that is nearly forgotten. Orlando Taylor, then an IU assistant communications professor, was a key player in these events. He remembers. View an interactive timeline of events.

Excess may be forced to close its doors as of April 30th, as the landlord says we are not what he had hoped we would be. We are holding a meeting at the space tomorrow night at 8 PM in order to possibly come up with some ideas on how to SAVE EXCESS. Please spread the word and come to the meeting if you want to help ensure Excess has a future.

Hey y'all!

~ We're consistently able to raise 75% of our monthly expenses by regular monthly contributions and anonymous donations. ~

And as you may have noticed, we spam y'all once a month to try to fill the 25% gap that remains.

Please visit excess-space.org/donations if you have a spare $5-10. If you want to go directly to the source, our paypal address is [email protected].

We only ask for small denominations of $$$, because
~ MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK ~

Thank you!

ps. The opening for Betsy Stout's exhibit "fEMPIRE" is this Friday, April 2! There will be cake!
