🎼What if repertoire is not just artistic programming… but the main governance system of the performing arts?

At Performing Arts Laboratory, we are excited to share the latest reflection from our General Director, Maestro Diego Barbosa-VĂĄsquez (DMus, MMus, BMus).

In this work, he explores how programming shapes the entire ecosystem:
🎻 Artists
🏛️ Organizations
🌍 Communities

—and how, when aligned through the Cultural Commons framework, this system can drive true sustainability:
✨ Artistic
💰 Financial
🤝 Social
🌱 Ecological

The idea is simple, but powerful:
Repertoire is not just what we perform.
It defines how resources flow, how decisions are made, and who feels represented on stage.

When these three constituencies align:
→ 🎻 Artists grow sustainably
→ 🏛️ Organizations operate strategically
→ 🌍 Communities engage meaningfully

🚀 The result?
Not just better concerts—but stronger, more sustainable performing arts ecosystems.

📈 This perspective is already generating real impact, including projects with significant audience growth and deep community engagement.

💬 Following the Cultural Commons framework, we would love to hear from you:
How do you see repertoire shaping the future of your organization and our field?

Opera is at 0.7%. Orchestras have lost half of their audience in a single generation. Let’s stop painting the ship—it’s sinking!

Opera, Orchestra, and Ballet are vital for humanity. The problem isn’t the art—it’s the governance structures.

The truth the data is screaming: this isn’t a “marketing problem.” It’s an existential crisis:
In 2008, 9.3% of adults attended orchestra concerts. Today? 4.6%.
Opera went from 3.2% in 2012 to 0.7% in 2022.
That’s not a slow decline. That’s a collapse.

And yet the industry’s answer? The same old tricks: repaint Bohème, add a “young professional” happy hour, and hope for the best.

We’re so busy selling tickets to the 0.7% that we forgot to ask the 99.3% what they actually need.

There is another way. One where communities co-create, not just watch. Where the art form belongs to everyone, not just the initiated.

The Opera Camp™ is just one viable example of how it works—and it’s proving the model is scalable. There are many more possibilities if we change the framework. You don’t have to abandon the canon—you just need to abandon the fear of sharing power and learn from new cultures, values, and stories.

We ALL can make this field thrive!

We've lost 80% of our audience because of the "paint jobs" in opera production and management. Real solution: Opera as cultural commons—like a lake shared by all, where every stakeholder helps shape it. Our Pre-Production Meetings let communities decide what stories matter. Because talent alone is no longer enough.

The world has changed. The conductor’s role has expanded. Today, standing on the podium demands more than a perfect beat pattern. It requires the ability to lead institutions, connect with communities, communicate with boards, and translate artistic vision into organizational reality.

That is the philosophy behind The 360° Maestro.

Not just a competition. Not just a workshop. A complete ecosystem designed to build the complete conductor.

Here, you don’t just rehearse. You learn why rehearsals succeed or fail.
You don’t just conduct. You learn how to lead the people holding the instruments.

You don’t just compete. You learn how to build a career that lasts.

This is the place where technique meets leadership. Where artistry meets strategy. Where the podium meets the profession.

The Final Deadline is March 29th.

The inaugural cohort is forming. The mentors are ready. The world is watching.

The only question left is: will you be part of it?

Apply now. Because the future belongs to the complete conductor.

Did you know that Opera IS NOT a highly intellectual art "totally disconnected of the society"? 🎭

There are many ways in which Opera can be very connected to full society (if governed well of course)... And the Music of the Opera is one of them...

This research reveals how composers used the influences of Folkloric-Popular Music—including tunes, songs, and genre characteristics—to create deeper connections with their audiences. Analyzing works from Rossini (Tarantella 💃🇮🇹🪗) to Bizet (Spanish/Gypsy aesthetics🪭🎶) and Piazzolla (Tango💃🔥🌹), the study shows that Opera has always aimed to be as close as possible to the people.
