Before the stone, there was the brush.

Rex Mhiripiri was a painter first, and his canvases still hang throughout the gallery: elephants, wild animals, landscapes, each signed in his bold MHIRIPIRI hand. They are as much a part of this place as the sculpture.

Rex Mhiripiri painted this one.

Before the gallery, before four decades of bringing Zimbabwean stone sculpture to Minnesota, he was a painter. He stayed one. Palms is acrylic on canvas, signed and framed, and it hangs here now among the work he spent his life collecting.

A sun going down over water. Palms bent the way wind leaves them. There is nothing complicated about it, which is part of why it stops people.

Most people know this room as a gallery.

Rex Mhiripiri ran this gallery for more than 40 years. He also kept painting throughout that time.

The works on the walls are original. Paintings Rex completed himself, signed, and hung in the same space as the Shona sculpture collection he spent his life building.

For a collector, that context matters. The work did not come from a studio somewhere else. It came from the same hands and the same eye that shaped this gallery.

The paintings speak to you when you first walk into the gallery.

Rex Mhiripiri's acrylics are vivid and large, full of color and the specific quality of African light: the gold of dry grassland, the deep blue of an open sky, the warm red of an elephant moving through the bush. They stop you before you even reach the sculpture.

Then you turn, and the stone is there. And the two things, paint and carved stone, speak to each other across the room in a way that only makes sense because the same person chose all of it.

That is the gallery. A life's work on every wall.
