Rex Mhiripiri once described his gallery this way:

"Here, Zimbabwe art works speak to Americans without me saying a thing. These strangers meet in our gallery. The cold stone works are their common language, warm, friendly, even loving and embracing, saying: Shake hands."

Forty years later, the work is still doing what he built it to do.

Come stand in front of a piece and find out what it has to say to you.

The first piece is usually the hardest one to choose.

After that, something interesting happens. The space you put it in starts to suggest the next piece. A sculpture on the entry table invites a painting on the wall above it. A small carved figure on a bookshelf asks for a companion. The collection grows in conversation with itself, one piece at a time.

There is no rush. Most of the collections we love most were built slowly, one visit at a time.

Whether you are starting your first piece or adding your fifth, we would love to help you find what comes next.

A pair of lions, hand-carved by W. Sachiti, a Zimbabwean sculptor working in stone from the mountainous ruins.

In Zimbabwean tradition, the lion is a symbol of strength, family, and watchful protection. Carved as a pair, they take on something quieter: companionship, balance, the way two figures can hold a space differently than one ever could.

Each piece is carved entirely by hand. The natural variation in the stone gives each lion its own character.

The male measures roughly 8.5 inches long. The female is slightly smaller at 7 inches. Sold individually or together.

Listed at $405 each. Mention you saw this on Facebook, and we will honor a social media price of $215 per lion buy both for $400.

Call, message, or email to arrange a visit.

Most people don't know this is here.

A working gallery, family-owned for forty years, holding one of the largest collections of Zimbabwean stone sculpture outside Zimbabwe. Original paintings. Hand-carved work from artists who have shown at Sotheby's and major museums.

All of it, ten minutes from the Mall of America.

Every mark in these sculptures came from someoneโ€™s hands.

No molds.
No mass production.
No identical copies.

Just stone, tools, years of experience, and the patience to slowly reveal the final form hidden inside the material.

That human connection is part of what makes hand-carved sculpture feel so different from manufactured dรฉcor.

Best appreciated in person. We would love to see you.

Some people assume art collecting starts with a huge purchase.

Most collections actually start with one piece that simply felt personal.

A sculpture someone couldnโ€™t stop thinking about.
A texture they kept coming back to.
A piece that reminded them of home, family, movement, or memory.

Art collecting is usually much more emotional than people expect.

Start or add to your collection today by calling, messaging, or making an appointment to stop in.

Small enough to fit in your hand.

Detailed enough to keep looking at for years.

This hand-carved hippo from Zimbabwe may be one of the smallest pieces in the gallery, but the natural variation in the green stone gives it enormous personality and warmth.

Pieces like this are often where collections begin:
small, meaningful, and completely unique.

Available through Mhiripiri Gallery.

Call, message or email today to visit in person.

The longer you spend in the gallery, the more you notice how much the light changes the stone.

A polished surface suddenly reflects gold.
Deep green turns almost black.
Textures you didnโ€™t notice before begin to appear.

Thatโ€™s part of why sculpture feels so different in person than it does online.

Every hour changes the room.

Come in and see for yourself and take home a beautiful piece today.

Colleen Madamombe was one of the few women working in Zimbabwean stone sculpture, and she is often considered the best.

Born in Harare in 1964, she trained in Fine Arts at the BAT Workshop School of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe before turning to stone carving in 1987. Working primarily in Springstone, she made the lives of Zimbabwean women her subject: women at work, harvesting, carrying water and children, giving birth, holding the authority of the tribal matriarch.

She won Best Female Artist of Zimbabwe three years in a row. Her female figures became a symbol of womanhood in Zimbabwe, eventually adopted by the Zimbabwean International Film Festival as the trophy for its winning women.

She passed away in 2009. The National Gallery of Zimbabwe held a retrospective of her life's work the following year.

Rex Mhiripiri represented her work, and her pieces remain part of the gallery's collection in Bloomington.

This gallery is proud to preserve cultural relationships and artistic legacy.
