Miller Park Zoo is celebrating a major milestone for red wolf conservation with the birth of four red wolf pups, born on May 12, to first-time parents Magnolia, age 7, and Max, age 8.

“Only about 25 red wolves remain in the wild,” stated Mary Pegg, Animal Care Manager at the Miller Park Zoo. “It’s a huge accomplishment that we get to contribute to this rare species’ population growth, especially for a zoo of our size.”

Staff at the Miller Park Zoo and the zoo medicine veterinarians at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Veterinary Medicine have taken a hands-off approach, allowing the new family to demonstrate natural behaviors. Magnolia has displayed strong maternal instincts since the birth of her pups. The pups are currently set up in a den curated by their parents in their habitat at the zoo.

The Miller Park Zoo works in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) program. This program’s goal is to support conservation efforts for the red wolf population by maintaining a healthy and viable population of red wolves under human care, growing education and awareness efforts and aiding research vital to supporting recovery and management.

The pups will remain with their parents for at least 16 to 17 months, which is the natural amount of time pups stay with their parents before becoming independent in the wild. Once they’re of age, they may be sent to other SAFE institutions to start their own packs to further increase the population of the critically endangered species.

Red wolves are native to the southeastern region of North America and were declared endangered in 1967 when only 14 red wolves remained. Currently, red wolves are considered critically endangered. Despite decades of conservation efforts, red wolves remain one of the most endangered species in the world.
