Gaming has lost a true legend 🎮💔

Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the creator of Double Dragon, Kunio-kun, and Renegade, has passed away at the age of 64.

He died on April 2, 2026, with the news confirmed by his family a few days later.

Kishimoto wasn’t just a developer — he was one of the pioneers who shaped the beat ’em up genre as we know it today. From arcade classics to unforgettable co-op gameplay, his work inspired generations of gamers and developers alike.

What made his legacy even more unique?
Many of his ideas came from his own life experiences, especially his high school years, which became the foundation for Kunio-kun.

From there, he evolved that concept into Double Dragon, helping define an entire era of gaming and setting the standard for side-scrolling action games.

His impact will live on every time we step into a virtual street fight.

Rest in peace to a true pioneer 🕊️
