Vintage Dance Society

Vintage Dance Society The Vintage Dance Society is dedicated to the reconstruction and preservation of the music and dances of the Victorian and Ragtime eras (circa 1840 to 1925).

The society works to develop theatrical performances, workshops and period social events. Periodically the society also hosts workshops, formal balls, and informal dances as a chance to meet other vintage dance enthusiasts, to learn new dances, and to hone one's dance skills.

Dear Friends,
It is with great sadness that we share the news that we recently lost one of our dearest friends, Bill Hughes.

Born William Wallace Ryder Hughes, Jr., on June 27, 1938, he died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of June 30, 2025, three days after his 87th birthday—a week-long celebration, capped by a serious weekend of partying with a dozen of his closest dance friends.

Bill joined the vintage dance community almost forty years ago. He and his partner Kit Northup showed up one day at our Hartford classes. But his theatrical flair and love for dance were truly cemented when they—quite by accident—joined the Vintage Dance Society troupe in the middle of a performance at the Wadsworth Atheneum in January 1987. Oops! From that moment on, they were "vintage dancers". It was only natural that they would then ultimately became part of the performing troupe “Prim But Not Too Proper.”

For the next 38 years, Bill (usually in the company of Kit or Vickie Wagner) was a constant presence on the dance floor. Whether he was dancing, or creating scenery with “Smoke & Mirrors”, or helping with events like the annual Holiday Ball in Wethersfield, the Newport Vintage Dance Week, Moments in Time’s “Summer by the Sea” and gatherings at Senexet House, Bill poured his heart and energy into building community and spreading joy through dance.

As the charming gent of “The Three Cheeses” (aka “Fromage à Trois”), Bill treasured their trips to Europe with Dvorana Dance (Prague, Paris, Provence, Vienna, Budapest, Dublin, and Pilsen), as well as weeks hosted by Flying Cloud, San Diego Vintage Dance Society, The Commonwealth Vintage Dancers, and The Vintage Dance Society.

Beyond dance, Bill had a rich and varied life. An officer in the Navy (most of you probably didn’t know that), he loved to sail. He loved to ski. A lifelong lover of classical music, he played violin in his youth (and he used to say that playing the banjo made him a chick magnet). In the past three decades he rarely missed a musical at The Goodspeed Opera House. He adored animated Disney films and made annual pilgrimages to Disney World. In April, he and Vickie made their fourth trip to the American southwest, whose beauty always brought him to tears. He was proud to cut a dapper figure in vintage clothes. He had a special love for animals, especially his cats. He loved to have a woman in his arms on the dance floor.

On top of everything else, he was always tinkering! Whether it was a computer or one of his vintage Saab convertibles, Bill was always taking something apart and putting it back together (he was an engineer after all). Being the consummate engineer, he had his own company for many years, but spent the last thirty working as an environmental engineer.

For those of you that would like to say goodbye:

Calling hours will be on Thursday July 10 from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike, Canton, CT.

There will be a graveside ceremony on Friday July 11 at 11:00 at the Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite animal rescue charity.

I suspect we will have a dance event down the road to honor both Bill and Kit, who passed away on April 26.

Dear friends and fellow dancers,

It is with great sadness I must let everyone know that our dear friend and fellow vintage dancer Kit Northup passed away this past weekend.

Kit joined the vintage dance world back in the late 1980s. She was an active dancer, event participant, event organizer, and creative resource to her fellow dancers for more than 30 years. From Hartford to Newport to Providence, and beyond, Kit was there 🤍

Please join us as we celebrate her life on Saturday May 3rd, 2025. There will be no formal service, but visitation will be from 12:00-2:00pm at Molloy Funeral Home. There may be an opportunity to share thoughts and memories at 1:30pm.

We're asking for your help...

Our dear friend, Regina Whitcomb, lost her home
and all of her belongings in the fires that swept through
her California neighborhood in the early morning of January 8.

She was not able to evacuate with much.

Her immediate needs include funds for temporary housing,
food, clothing, toiletries, and necessary medications.
She will also need assistance for anything that insurance
or FEMA may not cover, such as furniture, appliances,
and other household items.

Right now, the emotional toll of losing her home
and all of her personal belongings has left her in shock ...
any support is greatly appreciated!

100% of funds raised will go directly to Regina.

Fifty years after the American Revolution, the United States invited the Marquis de Lafayette to return and admire the success of their Great Experiment. On August 31, 1824, his tour brought him to Salem’s Hamilton Hall.

Join the Commonwealth Vintage Dancers for a recreation of an 1824 ball to mark the 200th anniversary of this occasion. Learn historically accurate dancing, enjoy marvelous period music played live, and indulge in delicious refreshments in a glittering ballroom. Sip sparkling cider and raise a toast to the return of the Marquis de Lafayette and to the memory of Alexander Hamilton.

To create the most immersive environment, all participants are required to wear high quality costume from the period of 1800-1825. All dances will be taught and highly participatory. Prepare yourself to be part of the magic of this event.

Tickets are on sale now! For more information and to register visit http://vintagedancers.org/events/event/lafayette-ball-24/

Dear Friends:

Our first of a kind masked holiday event is only a week away.

While my plan was to limit the event to no more than 50 people, this is not an issue, for at the moment only about 20 people have signed up.

I'm taking that as a sign that most of you are not yet comfortable with attending an in person dance event.

I certainly understand the hesitation. I too have had serious concerns about whether or not the time is right to hold an event. But I feel the precautions we are taking will provide for as safe an event as can be held at the moment.

While I hope a few more people will join us, at the moment I am thinking we will hold it regardless of how many people (or how few people) decide to come.

It is a strange time we live in, but I am hoping this is a good step towards the future. Perhaps you will give this some more thought and join us. But if not, I will look forward to seeing you on the dance floor sometime in the future!!

Be well; stay safe.
Best regards,
Marc
