When approaching a mix you had to understand the sound of the house. You can’t try to make a church that has a more CCM feel like a church with a Gospel feel. Tighten up those reverbs and let fill the space naturally. Glue it all@together and most of all make it feel good.

Getting a little practice with my family. Mix isn’t perfect but it’s tighter, cleaner, warmer, and ultimately it feels good and makes you want to rock and clap a little!!!

Practice Makes Progress!!!

One thing most FOH engineers don’t get to do is practice in no stress situations. Often times we are perfecting in high pressure environments where we have to get it right.

Being able to practice on a previously recorded multitrack gives the opportunity to experiment with techniques, processing and workflows in a no pressure space to ensure we are constantly pushing the envelope forward.

Mixing is always somewhat of an adventure cause you never what the files are going to be like when you get them but regardless of that if there is one instrument I absolutely love mixing it is drums.

Ironically as a “former drummer” I used to struggle mixing drums cause I would always lose perspective when trying to get what I wanted to hear out of them. Then I learned that sometimes less is more and also little adjustments with serial processing works best!!!

One Night of Empowerment was an exciting and eventful night!!! We had an hour to load in full audio and backline into a venue sight unseen!!! It was definitely challenging but we got it done and smacked the room.

The key to this kind of success if preparation. Console scene created in advance. General EQs and settings done in advance. Ensuring that all racks are prewired as much as possible and of course a clear and well planned stage plot and I/O sheet. •

Don’t ask me why the logo is over my face. Still playing around with getting my settings right!!

Practical Mixing Tip - when triggering drums make sure you go through and really check your triggers and the drum performance. Due to the dynamics of drummers performance you can find that strums are being missed due to the settings on your trigger.

Side note: clean your toms when necessary to help avoid the bleed from cymbals and other drums that are being picked up in your mics!!!

Mixing Broadcast while mixing FOH can be challenging because it can be difficult to get a good perspective on the mix due to the volume of the PA but you make do and get the job done!!!
