Established in the fall of 2016, Digging in the Crates: Hip Hop Studies at Virginia Tech, or , is a team of transdisciplinary faculty, staff, and students at Virginia Tech that works to foster community-based learning among Hip Hop artists, fans, practitioners, and scholars digitally and globally. We aim to model that faculty, staff, students, and, importantly, community members’ scholarship, art, activism, and publications related to Hip Hop are worthy of academic study. We have further established Hip Hop studies’ presence on Virginia Tech’s campus, in the academy, and, notably, in the broader community through our more than 600 free, community-engaged programs.
