The Jackson County Fair, the Livestock Show world, and our community lost a very talented young showman and an incredibly special young gentleman. To put it simply, there are no words... only a range of feelings and emotions. There is shock; the kind that leaves you searching for an explanation when none seems possible. There is sadness, an emptiness that settles over a community when someone so young is gone far too soon. There is anger because life can feel incredibly unfair. There are tears for the memories that will never have a chance to be made, but there is also gratitude for the memories we were fortunate enough to share. Grief has a way of bringing all of these emotions together, sometimes in the same moment, as we try to understand a loss that simply cannot be put into words.
For those who knew Adam through the County Fair and in the Livestock Ring, those emotions are tied to a place filled with memories. Raising and showing beef cattle teaches patience, responsibility, determination, and how to keep going when things don't go as planned. For anyone who came to know Adam, they would say that he exemplified all of those traits and so much more. Those same lessons somehow feel different today. The Livestock Barn will seem quieter, the show ring a little emptier, and there will always be a space that reminds us of the young exhibitor who should still be standing there; halter in hand, surrounded by friends, family, and fellow exhibitors.
Perhaps one of the greatest lessons of the fair is that ribbons eventually fade, banners gather dust, and the animals worked with eventually leave the barn; but the people and memories stay with us forever! A life is not measured by the number of years lived, just as any exhibitor is not measured by the color of the ribbons they have received. It is measured by the friendships made in the Livestock Barn, the young exhibitors encouraged along the way, the laughter shared in the aisles, the helping hand and mentorships offered when someone needed it, and the memories left in the hearts of others. As we grieve a life that ended far too soon, may we carry those memories with us each time the Livestock Barn gate closes, each time cattle enter the show ring, and each time another young exhibitor picks up an halter and continues a tradition that meant so much to someone we will never forget
