Sarah Sunshine Pottery is all handmade in Black Mountain, North Carolina, by Sarah Vekasi. Located in the heart of downtown, Sarah Sunshine Pottery has a shop at 105 Cherry Street, Black Mountain, and a studio seven blocks away where it is all made. Her love of wild and natural places is reflected in the simple elegance of this functional pottery. Sarah grew up first in Glacier National Park, and then Acadia National Park. She has lived in the temperate rainforest, the high desert, on the ocean, in a Zen Monastery in Japan, in an Old Growth tree, and in India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. It is her love of mountains and rural places that helped Sarah settle in Black Mountain,NC in the heart of Appalachia, in 2010. Working with clay is a daily meditation. It brings me (Sarah) back to the direct moment, the specific placement of now, as making pottery requires focus and presence. Centering clay helps keep me centered, and producing pottery helps sustain all of my work.

This photo is from last night when I dropped off ten bins of new pots at my shop after hours, before getting some ice cream with my Mom at The Hop, and walking around our sweet town.
I make each piece of pottery by hand in my studio a few blocks north of my store, finish it with a unique glaze formulated from scratch, and once it is fired, wrap up each piece with washcloths and towels that I have used and reused over these past sixteen years, and deliver it to my store.

16 years ago today my life took a turn when I started a community clay class at the new pottery studio here in town. There were only two of us in the class, Tuesday mornings from 10-12. These quickly became the best two hours of every week for me. I was obsessed with clay from the very beginning. Centering my mind to center the clay. Creating vessels for everyday use: what joy!

So much has changed since then. I have grown into more than a fulltime potter with a full studio, and handmade unique glazes. I am also an employer, a shop owner, an active member of our business community, the Mtn Xpress “Best Potter in Western NC,” and I am also still completely in love with centering clay, and making useful vessels to bring beauty into our everyday lives.
Thank you all for being part of this journey, and celebrating this Potterversary with me. ❤️❤️❤️

Storm has passed us, and we will be open again today. Much love and support to everyone in the path of Isaias. I stayed at my parents house last night and am enjoying a morning cup of tea in one of my very old Greybeard mugs. 💜 Maybe you need a new favorite mug to use daily for the next decade and a half too? 💜
