It was just about a year ago that I entered my first escape room with some friends. We had a great time working together to try to solve the puzzles in the room. Although we failed miserably, we enjoyed the experience and was ready to try it again. We went out to eat afterwards and talk about our experience. Over the next few months, we signed up for another couple of escape rooms and, once again, enjoyed the experience.
Our CPA practice relocated to downtown Bixby at 7 West Dawes about 11 years ago. We started renting this building when we moved out and over to the old Cowboy Bill Watts house on Breckenridge. Around January of this year, we were notified of our tenant was moving out. Karla was getting ready to put a “For Rent” sign in the window when I asked her to wait. I thought that we could use the space to start our own escape room in downtown Bixby. “Why not?”, I said. I liked the idea of renovating the building at the same time the Charley Young Park was being renovated.
I had no idea how much hard work it would take to get the building completely renovated and ready for the public by May. We had to paint all the walls, create some “passages” between rooms. We started coming up with ideas for puzzles to implement. It was helpful to reach out to the Escape Rooms community and find some people who were willing to help us get established. Kirk Nettles (some of you know him as Dr. Nettles in the Virus room) helped me get the first couple of rooms started. We really enjoyed making the videos for the rooms. I contacted Karla’s cousin, Terry Sanders, about starring in the instructional video. He was a natural and we are very proud of how his video turned out. He also got us in touch with a production studio out of Grove, Okla. that helped us put together some of our footage.
The City of Bixby has been preparing to revitalize the downtown area. I wanted us to do our part by offering a unique entertainment experience for the people of Bixby and South Tulsa. I hope that you enjoy it. We still have a long ways to go to wake this sleepy town up. For those of you who are longing to see the kind of change that has occurred in Broken Arrow, it is not a matter of if it will happen, but when. I want to see some restaurant/bar down here in the next 3-5 years. That way, when you leave our building, you do not have to travel far to dine and talk about your experience. Oh well, we will get there Bixby, just be patient!!
