Selkie I. Here, I was unusually open to discovery, with no idea at the outset where this piece was going. Playing with a gel-printed background thx to Ann Pease Dodys and Betsy Rose, I happened on a way to incorporate ‘s approach with abstract design as background, and somehow that part became a cloud of hair. I thought about the advice of Mary Whyte shared with me by my friend Gail Langer Karwoski “be a poet not a journalist”, and this happened. I discovered a selkie. It takes a village y’all. With much appreciation to my friends, mentors and fellow artists 💖

Excited to visit Saint Louis Art Museum on my quest to contextualize and attribute this remarkable pastel portrait, Portrait of a Young Woman. The treatment of the subject gives so much to think about.

I had a lovely correspondence with , while working on this portrait. He brings energizing wisdom, generosity, and enthusiasm to a distinctive online presence, which I thought about as the piece progressed. Some people build an audience, others build a community. 😻

Enjoyed lunch and an outing to with my dad and his very important lady friend 💖 He knew Jean Whitney, the portrait subject - my childhood best friend - so it felt like a full circle moment.

This line from Katie Kane’s essay on Whistler in Inside Art caught my eye: “The subject was the starting point, not the destination”. The paintings shown here reflect my wrestling with that very thing. In the portrait of Liam Conejo Ramos, I show the stairs behind him in the detention center but let them suggest bars. My rendition of 1575 portrait of unknown man explores how pastel behaves, and the picture on the easel simplifies the reference photo to focus on the boy’s expression of alertness, perhaps weariness, and say something about school as both a structuring and containing force in a child’s life.
