This conceptual design study for a potential project in Huntsville, Alabama explores how simple forms, refined metal cladding, careful proportions, and selective moments of color can create a building that feels purposeful and quietly expressive.

The design looks for a balance between function and identity, supporting the larger facility while introducing a distinct architectural layer.

Built from constraint. Designed for openness.

Container House explores how a disciplined system can produce a home that feels calm, open, and connected to its surroundings.

A roofline shaped by the biomechanics of a horse in full gallop.

Another view of the Horse Farm Cabin, perched on a gentle rise within a working horse farm outside Birmingham, Alabama.

The design draws from the quiet language of Southeastern barns and utility sheds. Board-and-batten cedar, rough stone gathered from the site, and corrugated metal anchor the cabin in its agrarian surroundings.

Facing the pasture, the roofline unfolds into a sequence of angular gables inspired by the biomechanics of equine motion. The shifting forms organize the interior spaces while lifting views across the open landscape and filling the cabin with natural light.

From the road, the cabin appears modest and grounded.
From the pasture, it comes alive with motion.

River House | Carriage House

Courtyard elevation.

The composition is shaped by the vertical rhythm of the surrounding woods and the quiet horizontality of the riverbank. Proportion became the discipline that held those forces in balance; guiding the massing, spacing, and overall restraint of the design.

This residence is about to begin construction along the Cahaba River, and we’re looking forward to watching it move from rendering to reality.

If you’d like to follow along as it takes shape, we’ll be sharing updates along the way.

For several years, we’ve designed and 3D printed a Christmas tree ornament, and our 2025 ornament is a wreath.

Wreaths have a surprisingly deep history: first as woven circles used to honor achievement, and later as evergreen symbols of resilience and hope through winter. We love that a simple ring can carry that much meaning.

Designing products like this is a small, playful way to practice what we believe: creativity isn’t only for big projects. It shows up in the details. In making, in trying, and in celebrating the season with something we crafted by hand (and printer).
You can find this year’s ornament (and others) at the Birmingham Museum of Art Gift Shop.

What does a wreath mean in your home?

We’re honored to share that RE:STATION has received an Honorable Mention in the 2025 Architecture MasterPrize.

With submissions from 72 countries, this international recognition places the project within a global conversation on architecture, sustainability, and adaptive reuse. RE:STATION reimagines the obsolete gas station as a hydroponic garden market, transforming a fading infrastructure into a food-producing community hub that serves people and neighborhoods in new ways.

We’re grateful to the Architecture MasterPrize jury for the recognition and thankful for the clients and collaborators who make thoughtful, forward-looking design possible.

An exterior view of a design we created for a new home in Bessemer, Alabama, composed of six shipping containers. The project explores how modular industrial elements can be transformed into a thoughtful, light-filled living environment through proportion, spatial clarity, and intentional openings.

There’s something undeniably fun about discovering a hidden door. Especially when it leads to one of the most hardworking spaces in the home.

In this kitchen, the pantry is tucked behind a fully integrated door that blends seamlessly with the surrounding cabinetry. At first glance, you’d never know it’s there… and that’s exactly the point.

Why this design works so well:
- A cleaner, calmer kitchen. No visual clutter, just intentional lines and warm materials.
- A delightful moment for homeowners and guests. A functional space that feels like a secret.
- Smart use of design continuity. The dark cabinetry becomes architecture, not just storage.
- Function without compromise. The pantry stays accessible but beautifully out of view.

Great design should solve problems and spark joy... and sometimes, it does both with a single hidden door.

An exploration in quiet retreat.
This concept study imagines a client’s sauna as a small structure deeply rooted in its natural setting. A green roof folds into the landscape, while warm cedar surfaces and a single vertical window create a balance between enclosure and openness. The design explores how form, light, and material can work together to craft a restorative space, where simplicity meets stillness.

Element
An idea is understood more fully when it can be compared to one that is already known. And a design becomes more meaningful when it invites someone to form their own revelation.

These principles are cast into Element.
The straight line and the angle.
The square and the circle.
New technology meets ancient technique.

What might seem like contradiction instead becomes harmony, each piece strengthening the other. The tension between differences gives the form its quiet power and balance.

The Horse Farm Cabin was designed for quiet connection. To the rhythms of the land, to light, and to rest. Spaces flow without boundaries, creating subtle transitions between gathering and retreat.

Every detail serves the idea of ease: the way morning light enters, how air moves through the structure, how views unfold without spectacle. It’s architecture meant to be felt as much as seen. Calm, grounded, and alive in its setting.
