About the artist:

Born in the UK, she graduated from Goldsmiths College School of Art, London, in sculpture and printmaking. She moved to Denmark and worked for forty years as a conservator of decorative arts. Jennifer returned to printmaking in the mid-90s attending workshops to learn about non-toxic printmaking. Twelve years ago, she discovered mezzotint which has become her main medium. She has exhibited her mezzotints in juried shows nationally and internationally, winning several awards for best in show (including Ink Only V last year in Birmingham) and purchase awards. In 2016 she moved permanently to the US and in 2020 became an American citizen.

“Mezzotint’s sculptural quality continues to challenge my abilities to create light and form, a third dimension out of a two dimensional space. My home is in the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona. I have spent hours drawing in the desert where plant life allures and repels as everything is adorned with spines and hooks. It is this contradictory beauty, that’s both guarded and repelling yet fragile and beckoning, that I so try to capture in my mezzotints.”

Come see our lovely Paperworkers Local member, Shannon Bourn, tonight at her show's opening reception from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Walker County Arts Alliance!

The Walker County Arts Alliance is pleased to present "3 1/2 Hours in the Sipsey Wilderness", a solo exhibition by Alabama artist Shannon Bourn which will be on view from May 14 - August 21 at the Walker County Arts Alliance, 1500 Indiana Ave. Jasper, AL.

About the show:

This body of work is inspired by Bourn’s first visit to the Sipsey Wilderness in Bankhead National Forest, a landscape known for its natural beauty and significance to generations of hikers, campers, and explorers. Drawn by a long-standing interest in Alabama’s geology and native flora, Bourn set out on what was meant to be a simple introductory hike.

What followed was a vivid and immersive experience. Rock walls, dripping water, lush ferns, and towering magnolias and hemlocks shifted in tone and color as the landscape moved through rain, mist, and sunlight. The experience left a lasting emotional impression, one that Bourn continues to explore through this body of work.

About the artist:

Shannon Bourn is an artist based in Hoover, Alabama. She earned her BFA in painting with a minor in drawing from the University of Evansville and her M.Ed from Cleveland State University. After years working in art education and administration, she returned to a full-time studio practice focused on painting and printmaking. While much of her work has centered on observing people in public spaces, this recent work reflects a shift toward landscape and personal experience.
