We hear this from teachers every season. 💙 "To watch my students be swept away in the music was a really special thing... Several of the students had such visceral reactions and were so moved. I thought the concert was absolutely wonderful. Captivating and fun with familiar selections. We loved it!" — Local Educator.

Before he was President of Your Orchestra, Mark Patrick worked with the stage crew — a job he landed because a few of the crew members had also worked on the crew for a rock band that Mark played in. That was nearly 25 years ago. Since then, he’s been Director of Operations, General Manager, and, since 2019, President. But ask him what he loves most about the job, and it’s not the title. It’s the discovery. “We still play pieces every year that I’ve never heard before,” he says. “I think that’s been the thing that’s made this such an enjoyable job.” Mark’s story is a good reminder: you don’t have to grow up with classical music to fall in love with it. Sometimes coming to it later just makes the magic hit harder. (Ask him about the piano in his living room that survived a thunderstorm — it’s a good one.)

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra opens the 26/27 season with its largest annual fundraiser,
Opening Night in Hollywood!
The September 25 event is held at UAB's Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham. The evening includes
a cocktail reception with hors d'oeuvres by Chef Frank Stitt and Pardis Stitt, a live concert of film
favorites performed by the full orchestra, and an after-party with a live band and dancing.
But more than a celebration, it's how the A*O funds its work — the musicians who call Alabama
home, the concert season, the music education programs, and the free community performances that
belong to this entire state.
Sponsorship opportunities at multiple levels are available for 2026. Alabama Symphony Orchestra
has been part of this state for over a century. Opening Night is how the next century begins.

We need it.

There’s something about live music that nothing else — no playlist, no recording, no screen — can replace. Our subscribers feel it. Our musicians feel it. Alabama feels it.

The Alabama Symphony will be back on stage this fall. Are you in? 🎻

Your orchestra's chorus is looking for new voices.

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra Chorus is holding auditions for the 2026/2027 season the week of August 17 (Monday the 17th, Tuesday the 18th, and Thursday the 20th) at Riverchase UMC in Hoover. There's nothing to prepare.

Founded in 1966, the A*O Chorus has been the Official Chorus of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra since 1997, performing everything from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to Handel's Messiah, with appearances at Carnegie Hall and England's International Cathedral Music Festival. Alabama's only professional symphony orchestra has a chorus with just as much history — and it's looking for you. This season, that legacy needs new voices, and we're excited to welcome Melinda Doyle, DMA, as our new chorus director.

To schedule your audition, contact Chorus Manager Rick Atkerson at [email protected].

Science class has never sounded this good. 🎶 A*O Explorer Concerts are designed for PK–2nd-grade students, connecting live symphonic music to STEAM concepts your students are already exploring in the classroom. How are sound waves made? How do musicians count in time? What are the building blocks composers use to write music? Your students will experience the answers live — from the concert hall.
