Four weeks until Mutations: Bach, Bartók & Barber takes the stage at the Avon Theater.

Samuel Barber opens the night by transforming a centuries-old chorale into brass. Bach follows with the Baroque color of his Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 — horns, oboes, and strings in conversation. Bartók closes it out, folding Eastern European folk melody into the same musical language. Daniel Cho conducts.

An all-English program, led by guest conductor Molly Turner, built around two of the most beloved works in the orchestral repertoire.

Elgar's Enigma Variations is a musical portrait gallery — fourteen variations, each a sketch of someone dear to the composer — while Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is quieter, a meditation for string orchestra that seems to exist outside of time. The program also features Brahms' Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn and Ethel Smyth's vivid seascape "On the Cliffs of Cornwall," from one of British music's most pioneering yet undersung figures.

Associate Conductor Daniel Cho leads your orchestra through a program built around musical transformation — opening with Samuel Barber's Mutations from Bach, a brass work that reshapes a 17th-century chorale, moving into Bach's own Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, and closing with Bartók's Divertimento for Strings, written in 1939 and rooted in Eastern European folk warmth.
