Visual culture shapes and reflects the values of society. They translate what they see into new forms, asking others to see them anew and, in doing so, broaden the scope of human perception and expression. Art historians look closely at art and artifacts from human history—from ancient to present day—to identify what those objects can tell us

about art, culture, power, and the human condition. This research process might uncover different things at various points in history, so art historians continue to revisit art from the past to see what we can learn from it. To look and to really *see* is a skill that requires training. While the spark of creativity and curiosity is something that comes from you and you alone, the UAB Department of Art and Art History is here to help you train your eye.

𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐲𝐮 𝐋𝐞𝐞

Born in South Korea and based in the United States, Lee is a multimedia artist whose practice centers on vessel and furniture making through ceramics and wood. Drawing from both Korean and American craft traditions, his work explores the relationship between function, movement, and human experience through meticulously crafted objects.

Lee investigates the foundational structures that shape our physical and metaphysical realities. Working primarily in hardwood, he transforms rigid materials into fluid, expressive forms that embody gesture, motion, and emotion. Through furniture and sculptural objects, he examines the ways the body communicates instinct, desire, and connection.

In Instinct, Lee presents a collection of functional and non-functional works that blur the boundaries between design and sculpture. Centered on themes of movement and human expression, the exhibition explores how gesture, form, and craftsmanship can reveal the invisible systems that shape our understanding of the world. Minkyu Lee, Butterfly Violin, 2026 for his upcoming solo exhibition “Instinct” Minkyu has painstakingly crafted a violin “Originating from my furniture practice, the Butterfly Violin continues my investigation into the relationship between the body, movement, and human experience. While the chair reflects the body’s physical presence, the violin becomes an extension of gesture, rhythm, and emotion through sound. The violin exists simultaneously as an object and a vessel for expression. In developing this work, I studied historical traditions and methods of sound-making while reinterpreting and reinventing the instrument’s form through the language of the body. This is the final week to visit the 2026 BFA Exhibition, presented with ! We hope you’ll join us for a closing celebration this Friday, May 1 from 5–7pm.

Featuring work by nine graduating BFA students, this exhibition brings together diverse practices and perspectives.

Among them, Karah Gohn (), Jaymie Hornsby (), and Angelina Robinson (.jpeg) each employ a language of portals and thresholds in distinct ways.

🚪Gohn’s paintings and transfer prints explore liminality, and the way memory creates a rift in one’s experience of linear time. For Gohn, portals become metaphors for the mind’s shifting terrain.

⏰ Hornsby’s paintings and collages use recurring symbols—clocks, doors, windows, and night skies—in their exploration of productivity culture and the way labor shapes one’s experience of time.

✂️ Robinson’s installation recreates a hair salon, complete with styling tools and copies of a magazine she created. As a licensed natural hair artist, Robinson centers the salon as a space of community and care.

Currently on view in AEIVA’s 2026 BFA Exhibition, works by Landon Krall (.artist), Gracie Hollington (), and Tauyhanni Bell (.bunz01) share a spirit of play—incorporating toys and other found objects, personal imagery, and interactive elements.

🔫 Krall’s multi media work blends painting, sculpture, and assemblage. Drawing on the material memory of childhood objects—such as toy guns, figurines, and keychains—he traces the formation of an artistic identity. His clay figures, inspired by the Jewish Golem, serve as symbolic protectors of the artist’s truth and creativity.

🌀 Hollington creates an intimate, dreamlike environment in her installation of both hyperrealistic and abstract paintings within a bedroom-like setting. An open sketchbook invites visitors to participate, tapping into a childlike, imaginative space where thoughts drift between waking and dreaming.

🎀 Bell’s large-format prints reflect the artist’s interest in Black beauty and fashion, presenting figures whose style is a powerful expression of identity. Viewers are invited to engage directly with the work, with swappable clothing elements that emphasize the fluid, evolving nature of self-presentation.

We loved welcoming local artist, bookmaker, and professor Doug Pierre Baulos to our Intro to Bookmaking class! 📚✨

Students explored an architectural book structure called a Gate Binding while working with handmade paper crafted from cotton and abaca fibers—created and beautifully marbled in Doug’s studio.

Doug also shared insights into their artistic journey, highlighting the intersection of science and art through biology, photogenic processes, and experimental book forms.

An accomplished artist and educator, Doug Pierre Baulos is an Associate Professor of Drawing at UAB and co-director of BLOOM Studios and Dye Garden. Their work—spanning drawing, collage, and book arts—has been exhibited nationally and internationally, often exploring themes of identity, love, death, shelter, and hope.
