Sidney Rittenberg, 1921-2019.

Those who attended events of the Alabama China Partnership may recall the charismatic Sidney Rittenberg. Sidney was one of the most insightful Americans regarding post WWII Chinese history, government, and business and the US-Chinese relationship. He was a key advisor to international business leaders and government officials in both China and the US.

Sidney passed away on August 24, 2019 at the age of 98. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Yulin Wang. Attached is Sidney's Obituary from the New York Times. A second entry below is an interview granted by Sidney only a few days prior to his death. Our condolences to Yulin and the Rittenberg family.

Once a dedicated Communist, Mr. Rittenberg became disillusioned after 16 years in prison in China and returned to the United States to forge a lucrative career helping companies do business in China.

The value of trade in goods between the United States and China during the first nine months of 2015 make China the biggest trading partner for the United States for the first time (Canada dropped to second). China is increasingly dependent on American consumers to buy its goods; total trade in 2015 is up 3.7 percent from the same nine month ins in 2014.
