Saturday, at the annual statewide ACT Summit, we celebrated this year's recipients of the ACT Awards. 1st up are the winners of the inaugural Theatre Culture and Community Award.

The Penguin Project of the Wetumpka Depot Players. Accepting the award on behalf of the many volunteers, mentors, artists, families, and supporters who work tirelessly to make this special-needs theatre outreach program possible were Hannah Meherg and Daniel Harms. The Penguin Project has become such an important part of the Depot, reminding them season after season that there is a place onstage—and in the theatre family—for everyone.

Meet me at the counter. ☕️

Terrific New Theatre’s 40th season continues with THE COUNTER by Meghan Kennedy, September 10-27.

In a small-town diner in Upstate New York, Katie is a waitress with secrets. Paul is a retired firefighter, a regular customer and a man struggling with pain.

Over coffee, conversation and the comfort of routine, an unexpected friendship begins to form.

Quiet, intimate and characterized as a “slow-brewing thriller,” THE COUNTER explores connection, trauma and the possibility of finding hope in unexpected places.

Directed by Tawny Stephens.

REGISTER NOW! ACT Annual Summit August 22 at Theatre AUM

Keynote: Theatre Matters: Now More Than Ever

In the tense, politically divisive times we currently inhabit, how do we as artmakers and educators make the case that our field is exactly what the world needs right now? That theatre is more than an art form of entertainment; it is a community-building practice, a space where we wrestle with the most pressing issues of our times, and a way of engaging culture and with each other. That theatre does vital labor (in the sense of work and also repair), connecting
people across differences, humanizing us in the age of AI, and modeling democracy? Join Dr. Megan Lewis, Chair of Theatre at UAB, as she makes the case for Theatre as an art form for our
times.
