Scott Miller Projects is excited to announce our participation in the 43rd Magic City Art Connection, taking place at Sloss Furnaces, on April 24-26, 2026. We will be presenting a selection of works by artist Delrico Gibson.

Delrico Gibson (b. 1958, Detroit, MI; d. 2023, Clanton, AL) was a self-taught artist whose practice is rooted in resilience, faith, and gratitude. For over fifty years, Gibson created intricate “symmetric abstract design string art,” weaving thread, yarn, and reclaimed materials into luminous compositions that pulse with movement and intention.

In 2017, Gibson moved to Clanton, Alabama, where he would spend the remaining years of his life. In February 2020, a gasoline explosion at his family’s restaurant left him with catastrophic burns that reshaped his body and nearly took his life.

After weeks in a medically induced coma and months of intensive treatment, Gibson faced the possibility that he might never create again. Instead, his determination to return to art became a driving force in his recovery. Gibson began each of his pieces by performing precise mathematical calculations to manifest his envisioned “5D picture” using a single, uncut string of yarn.

His vibrant structures blur the line between painting and sculpture and, by using a singular string, communicated uninterrupted unity and shared experience, appropriate as many of his works pay tribute to specific individuals who walked with him through the aftermath of the fire.

People often say space is stitched together like a quilt. For Desmond Lewis, it’s far more likely cut, burned, ground, or formed. For a quilt covers over in the same moment it offers comfort and warmth, and Lewis focuses far more acutely on the unanticipated outcomes of the slow reveal. So they let you out of Memphis is a map, one that transcribes journeys between places that might not seem close at first, but are even closer still.

Fragments and Other Considerations
August 14 - September 13, 2025

Logan’s Elegy series, which the artist began in 2017 and is ongoing, most recently and fully visualizes his concerns with the matter and matters of memory. Elegies are requiems, funeral songs for the dead. Logan makes elegies for the living that revive lost and fragmented memories and that forecast systems of knowledge for future generations. Each composition is a blueprint for navigating spatial
constraints, from the frame of the artwork to the natural and built environment to the mind and imagination. In the series, specific colors, shapes, and lines become ciphers for historical and contemporary places, people, and events.

Across six works drawn from the Elegies series, Logan invites us to reflect upon, and perhaps even recall memories, of self, site, and soul. But rather than use scale to shout tales that are bold, brash, and loud, Logan’s works are systematic, small, and nuanced. Take Elegy 84 for example. Here, against a ground that reads as thumbprints and dots as much as it reveals a sublime repetition Logan’s integral depiction of the black head, we’re invited to explore what we believe to be abstract geometries. Perhaps we’re discovering subtle historical and spiritual narratives instead. It’s that grid. As Rosalind Krauss observed, “The grids mythic power is that it makes us able to think we are dealing with materialism…while at the same time it provides us with a release into belief.”
