Scott Miller Projects is excited to announce our participation in the 43rd Magic City Art Connection, taking place at Sloss Furnaces, on April 24-26, 2026. We will be presenting a selection of works by artist Delrico Gibson.
Delrico Gibson (b. 1958, Detroit, MI; d. 2023, Clanton, AL) was a self-taught artist whose practice is rooted in resilience, faith, and gratitude. For over fifty years, Gibson created intricate “symmetric abstract design string art,” weaving thread, yarn, and reclaimed materials into luminous compositions that pulse with movement and intention.
In 2017, Gibson moved to Clanton, Alabama, where he would spend the remaining years of his life. In February 2020, a gasoline explosion at his family’s restaurant left him with catastrophic burns that reshaped his body and nearly took his life.
After weeks in a medically induced coma and months of intensive treatment, Gibson faced the possibility that he might never create again. Instead, his determination to return to art became a driving force in his recovery. Gibson began each of his pieces by performing precise mathematical calculations to manifest his envisioned “5D picture” using a single, uncut string of yarn.
His vibrant structures blur the line between painting and sculpture and, by using a singular string, communicated uninterrupted unity and shared experience, appropriate as many of his works pay tribute to specific individuals who walked with him through the aftermath of the fire.
