For years I thought I was learning belly dance.

What I eventually discovered was that I was learning how to listen.

To the music.
To my body.
To the spaces between the notes.
To the wisdom carried through rhythm.

Every step, every circle, every beat became an invitation to hear life more deeply.

Sometimes the greatest transformation doesn’t happen when we learn to move.

It happens when we learn to listen. 🌹

Frame drum class today! 🥁✨

A wonderful afternoon of rhythm, learning, and laughter with Jerry and our new student, Zoe.

It was inspiring to watch Zoe dive into something new with such enthusiasm and confidence. Every beat is a step on a new journey, and she picked it up so quickly!

Grateful for great teachers, eager students, and the joy that music and movement bring into our lives. 💖🥁

My wife and her students did this tribute for Noah.❤️

Here’s a shorter version that feels warm and personal:

Yesterday, I received a text from my friend Audrey Keith from my hometown in Canada. She shared that her grandson, Noah, is waiting for a liver and kidney transplant and invited people to take part in a virtual fundraiser walk.

When she wrote, “maybe you could take a little walk (or dance 💖),” an idea instantly came to me.

I created a song with a Saidi rhythm just for Noah, and today my intermediate belly dance class learned a little choreography and dedicated our dance to him. 💙

Sometimes a dance can become a prayer.

If you’d like to support Noah and his family, here’s the link:

Please keep Noah and his family in your thoughts and prayers. 💙🙏

This afternoon Jerry was in his creative flow recording a beautiful new piece of music He brought his gorgeous frame drum and Jill and I joined in playing a gentle chiftetelli rhythm together

As we were playing a name came to my mind

Slow Drift

It felt like one of those quiet little moments where the music speaks first and you simply listen 💛

On May 16, I had the honor of hosting a special celebration honoring Tamalyn Dallal’s 50-year journey in dance.

As I was preparing for the event that week, I found myself asking a simple question: What should I dance?

Since the theme of the evening was a walk down memory lane, I began looking through old costumes and remembering special moments from my dance journey.

Then I saw my Isis wings.

Immediately, I was transported back to my first trip to Egypt, where I purchased them many years ago. The memories came flooding back.

As I continued looking through my costumes and music, I remembered one of my earliest solo performances: a drum solo that I absolutely loved dancing.

The performance suddenly came together.

I chose to dance to “Peitho’s Veil” by Paul Dinletir with my Isis wings, followed by “Move” by Said Mrad for the drum solo.

Both pieces brought me back to an earlier chapter of my dance journey, and it felt fitting to revisit them while celebrating 50 years of dance, friendship, community, and inspiration.

Before the performance, I began sharing a little about the story and symbolism of Isis. My husband Jamie was standing beside me and gently reminded me not to wander too far into the ancient mysteries. 😄 You’ll see that sweet moment in the video.

What I enjoyed most about this performance was simply remembering.

Remembering my first trip to Egypt.

Remembering my early years of performing.

Remembering the music that inspired me.

And sharing those memories with fellow dancers, students, friends, and our local community.

Some dances stay with us for a lifetime.

These were two of mine.

With love,

Joany Gauvreau
