OPENING CEREMONY | OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

We begin Lone Peak Film Festival by slowing down, grounding ourselves, and honoring the land on which we gather.

Drawing from a spiritual practice shared across many Indigenous communities, the Opening Ceremony will begin by asking permission from the land, the elements, and traditional custodians before entering into an activity that affects others.

Led by local Indigenous people, the ceremony will include prayer, song, and dance, offering a moment of connection, reflection, and intention as we begin the festival together.

For the first time, we will also construct a tipi in Len Hill Park—a ceremonial space open throughout the festival to anyone who needs a quiet place to pause, reflect, or find some grounding amid the energy of the weekend.

All are welcome. Come as you are.

Meet the 2026–27 Lone Peak Film Institute Fellows 🎬🏔️

We believe great filmmakers don’t just need an opportunity—they need community, mentorship, and the time and space to develop their voice.

The Lone Peak Film Institute Fellowship supports emerging local and Indigenous Montana filmmakers with a year of mentorship and connection. Fellows receive full sponsorship to attend our multi-day Artist Retreat during the Lone Peak Film Festival, including travel, lodging, meals, film screenings, festival events, and meaningful time with visiting filmmakers and industry mentors.

And the relationship doesn’t end when the festival does.

For the following year, fellows receive ongoing support through monthly calls and individualized mentorship as they develop their projects and move their stories toward the screen.

We’re proud to award the fellowship for a second year—and even prouder to introduce the 2026–27 cohort:

WMPAC Welcomes LPFF | Featuring Philip Daniel

Distinguished pianist and composer Philip Daniel brings his immersive multimedia performance to Big Sky, blending solo piano, ambient electronics, percussion, live looping, and visual art into one seamless experience.

His performance will be paired with two extraordinary short films. Can you guess what they are?

🏆 One is an Emmy-winning film featuring original music by Big Sky resident Mike McCready of Pearl Jam.

🪶 The other features Indigenous music and the work of 20-time Grammy-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

It’s more than a film screening. It’s an evening of music, story, culture, and imagery—and the perfect way to enter the world of Lone Peak.

We’re bringing A River Runs Through It to the Gallatin Valley for a special community screening celebrating the 50th anniversary of Norman Maclean’s beloved book.

And there’s something extra special about seeing this film here: some of its most memorable scenes were filmed right here along the Gallatin River.

Join us for a morning screening featuring Patrick Markey, the legendary producer who produced the film alongside Robert Redford. Patrick will be on hand for a live Q&A following the screening, sharing stories from the making of this Montana classic.

2025 Fellow Feature: Destini Vaile

From Browning and the Blackfeet Tribe, Destini Vaile now lives in Missoula, MT, where she’s building a filmmaking practice rooted in vision, purpose, and the goal of bringing her stories to theaters.

The Lone Peak Fellowship challenged Destini to think bigger while staying grounded in the practical realities of filmmaking.

“Lone Peak Fellowship pushed me as a filmmaker through both encouraging development of a clear vision and grounding that vision with support for the practical necessities of filmmaking.”

We’re proud to have Destini as part of the Lone Peak Fellowship community and can’t wait to see where her vision takes her next.
