Biddeford Ice Arena

Biddeford Ice Arena Southern Maine’s premiere ice arena! Biddeford Ice Arena was constructed in 1973 and opened in 1974.

The arena was constructed by two investors who resided in Sanford, Maine. Over the course of the following 4 years, the area operated on a yearly basis, never knowing if it would open each year. Portland Savings Bank played a major role in keeping the arena from being sold for other purposes. In 1978, members of the Biddeford Youth Hockey Association formed the York County Recreation Association.

The non-profit corporation was formed to try to obtain stability. The association raised the needed money and leased the arena from the bank for 9 months. Local area hockey enthusiast bought shares in the corporation and Biddeford Youth Hockey Association launched a massive fundraising events; such as car washes by the Maine Mariners, spaghetti suppers, and hosting hockey games. The Maine Mariners held their first scrimmage at the arena against the then Nova Scotia Voyageurs. In May of 1979, the York County Recreation Association dissolved. Later that same year, York County Arena association was formed and gained non-profit status entitling it to tax-exempt status. John Narsiff, one of the founding directors, recruited local businessmen as members as the new association board of directors. The association hired Andy Lefebvre as the first general manager and approached the City of Biddeford to purchase the arena when the bank put the arena up for sale that year, with a plan to lease it back to the association. In 1979, the Biddeford City Council decided to let the voters decide by referendum if the city should purchase the arena at a cost of $285,000. The referendum passed under Mayor Roger Frechette’s administration, and the city immediately leased the area back to York County Arena Association to continue operating the facility.

A very important message from Biddeford Ice Arena:

Dear Biddeford Ice Arena Families, Skaters, and Community Members,

I am writing to you not only as the manager of the Biddeford Ice Arena, but also as someone who has seen firsthand the positive impact this facility has on our community. The arena is home to youth hockey programs, high school teams, and countless community members who come here to skate, play, and connect.

This November, the City of Biddeford will be voting on a $6 million recreation bond. Included in this bond are important improvements to the Biddeford Ice Arena. These upgrades are essential to ensuring that the rink can continue to meet the needs of our community today and for years to come. As many of you know, the facility is in need of capital investments: a new Zamboni to replace our aging machine, improvements to the subfloor of the rink, and updates that will make the building more welcoming, safe, and accessible for all who use it.

Your support matters. If you are a Biddeford resident, I encourage you to vote in favor of this bond. Beyond casting your ballot, I ask that you also talk to your programs, neighbors, and friends about why this investment is so important. Sharing your own stories of how the arena has impacted you or your family can make a difference.

Another way you can help is by writing a letter to the editor in our local papers. These letters don’t need to be long, they can be just a few sentences about what the Biddeford Ice Arena has meant to you and why you believe supporting this bond is a smart investment in our city’s future. If you don't want to write a letter, you can also share on your social media and tag the rink.

The rink belongs to all of us. With your help, we can ensure it continues to be a place where children learn to skate, athletes grow in confidence, and the community comes together. Thank you for being part of this arena’s story and for supporting its future.

Sincerely,
Michel Léveillé
Manager, Biddeford Ice Arena
