First trip on the season! Dropped off fresh work at Edison Studio 04852, helped my dad & amelia acconciamessa move a rock, climbed around on another rock, and took a brooding selfie with the morning mist. Necklaces headed to ! I sand cast the pendants in my biddeford studio, using hand-scupted masters. This process is fast, and leaves a gorgeous surface texture. Furthermore the molding sand is reusable, meaning there is very little waste. After removing the sprues (the pathway metal flows through on its way to the mold cavity, which is left at least partially full of metal at the end of the casting process) and other metal clean-up, i finish them with hand dyed & waxed nylon cords, and signature Sister Clasps. I'll be doing a batch of cord waxing in the next month or two, be on the lookout!

Cleft Necklace - final steps: after extruding the wax, cutting it into sections, & casting them in metal, it's time to carve the bail! Because the extrusion requires soft wax, this is easier to do (in my opinion) at this stage. First, I use a milling machine to rough it out. Forgot to take pics of that, but you can see the results in picture 2. My milling skills are nascent; forgive the crooked hole. After milling, I use files and burs to refine the opening & smooth the edges (pic 3). Finally, I sand blast & tumble in ceramic media to smooth & shine the metal, before adding the cord! This piece is my 'dressiest' design, as it shouldn't get wet & the fit needs to be perfect or it fan pop off with a snag on something, but it's also one of my most popular!
