🎉Meet the Director: Chelsea Hart Melcher 🎉

Chelsea Hart Melcher has been described as “cooly captivating,” “ethereal and sublime,” and “a woman to be reckoned with” onstage. A national finalist in Sherrill Milnes’ “Opera Idol” competition, Melcher earned a Performance Diploma from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, a Master of Music from The Ohio State University, and a Bachelor of Music from Central Michigan University. She has worked with numerous symphonies and opera companies across the nation, and was the soprano soloist for the American premiere of Requiem Novum by Mårten Jansson. Melcher has also performed as soloist in Verdi’s Requiem, Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder, Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Mass in C and Choral Fantasy, Mahler’s Second Symphony, Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living, Michael Haydn’s Requiem in C, Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass, and others. Her operatic roles include Micaëla and Frasquita in Carmen, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Valencienne in The Merry Widow, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Mimi and Musetta in La Bohème, Violetta and Annina in La Traviata, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Maria in The Sound of Music, Adina in L’Elisir d’amore, Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica, Butterfly in Madama Butterfly, Norina in Don Pasquale, Mariuccia in I Due Timidi, Female Chorus in The R**e of Lucretia, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte. Melcher is director of Opera and Musical Theater at the Capital University Conservatory of Music, and serves on the faculty of Columbus Children’s Theatre. She is the Founder of Vocal Career Academy and Nerves Be Gone Academy, and Co-Founder with her husband Paul Melcher of Red School of Music in suburban Columbus.

🎉Meet the Conductor: Luis Gabriel Biava 🎉

Luis Gabriel Biava is currently celebrating his 18th season as Music Director of the New Albany Symphony, an orchestra that performs a wide variety of concerts for the community, presenting the major repertoire, commissions, and a young artist’s competition. As Music Director of the New Albany Symphony, Mr. Biava has conducted notable guest artists including Jon Kimura Parker, Peter Dugan, David Finckel, Hilary Hahn, Chee-Yun, Charles Yang, Soovin Kim, Karen Gomyo, Michael Feinstein, Itzhak Perlman, and Branford Marsalis. He has also served as Principal Conductor for New Albany Ballet’s Nutcracker production. This year, Mr. Biava conducted and played with the Bogota Philharmonic for two weeks in subscription concerts and recently conducted at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music conducting workshop with Mark Gibson and Gustav Meier. In the summer of 2012, Mr. Biava was cover-conductor for the Philadelphia Orchestra for their final concert in Saratoga Springs, New York, and that same year conducted Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 and Mozart’s Adagio and Rondo for violin. He also guest conducted the Clermont Symphony in a concert commemorating the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001. In 2011, he was re-engaged by the Guatemala National Symphony, where he performed the Beethoven Triple and conducted Strauss’ Don Juan. In 2010, he conducted performances of Puccini’s La boheme in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He also has conducted The Marriage of Figaro and repeated performances of La boheme with Opera Libera; an opera company founded in honor of the late John Douglas, famed opera director at Temple University. In the summer of 2008, he conducted performances of Salieri’s Prima la musica, poi le parole, and Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mr. Biava’s educational endeavors include the School of Orchestral Studies in Saratoga Springs—a program for young musicians that mirrors the repertoire of the Philadelphia Orchestra during the three weeks of their residency at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

🎉Meet the Pianist: Narmina Aliyeva🎉

A native of Baku, Azerbaijan, Narmina Aliyeva graduated from Azerbaijan State Conservatory with the Honors Diploma in piano and organ performance and pedagogy, subsequently earning a Master degree in both organ performance and collaborative piano at the same institution. Along with her work as a church organist, for the past twenty plus years, Narmina has been on the faculty at Capital University, teaching accompanying and Russian Diction. She also serves as a staff accompanist, rehearsing and performing operas and musicals with the Capital University Opera and Musical Theater Department, and giving recitals with instrumental and vocal students, faculty members and guest artists. Having had a vast experience performing different styles of music, Narmina is highly sought-after as accompanist and collaborative pianist in Columbus area.
In addition, one of her biggest passions became teaching piano to children for the past decade.

🎉 Meet the Cast: Sam Owens - Gianni Schicchi (March 14th) 🎉

Sam Owens, baritone, is graduating this semester with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Capital University with a minor in Business Administration. At Capital, he has studied voice with Lynn Roseberry, Dr. Chad Payton, and Dr. Tammi Regensburger. He is a member and bass section leader of the Chapel Choir under director Dr. Lynda Hasseler. Sam has been a choral scholar and cantor at Christ Lutheran Church in Bexley, OH since 2020. He has been involved with Merit Theatre Company as an actor, conductor, vocal director, and arranger since 2018. Sam would like to dedicate this performance to his high school voice teacher, the late great Lincoln Chapman, who loved the music and comedy of Gianni Schicchi.

🎉Meet the Cast: Max Kramer - Gianni Schicchi (March 13th) 🎉

Max Kramer, baritone, is a senior Vocal Performance student at the Capital University Conservatory of Music. Recent productions include The Apple Tree (Guest Artist - Adam) with the Columbus School for Girls, Amahl and the Night Visitors (King Melchior) with Music On Site Inc., The Crucible (Thomas Putnam) and Falstaff (Robin/Chorus) with Harrower Summer Opera and Songs for a New World (Man 2) at Capital University. He is an active performer of many genres and is the founding baritone of Luces Stellarum, a premier chamber vocal ensemble. Max was a winner of the 2023 Capital University Scholarship Competition. He placed 2nd in the 2025 Ohio NATS Upper-Level Musical Theatre Competition and 4th in the 2025 Ohio NATS Upper-Level Classical Competition, as well as receiving an honorable mention in the 2025 Mirabell Schloss Competition in Salzburg, Austria. Max is a student of Dr. Caroline Bergan.

🎉 Meet the Cast: Hannah Stewart, Nella, cover for Lauretta 🎉

Hannah Stewart, soprano, is a senior majoring in Vocal Performance and Music Technology at Capital University. Her recent performance credits include The 80’s Show, A New Brain, and Revelation and Reinvention, and she appeared in Vignettes: Ellis Island with Capital University’s Department of Music. She has performed both nationally and internationally, with one of her most notable appearances taking place at Carnegie Hall. Hannah is a member of Capital University’s Chapel Choir and the founder of The Performer Platform, a business dedicated to supporting performers through education, resources, and creative development. She is the recipient of several honors, including the Summer Scholars Award and Boyd Fund (2024) and the Diversity and Inclusion Award (2024). Hannah has presented her research at Capital University’s 2025 Symposium and will present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in April 2026. She studies voice under Dr. Caroline Bergan.

🎉 Meet the Cast: Beaux Baldwin - Rinuccio, cover for Gherardo 🎉

Beaux Baldwin, tenor, hails from Columbus, Ohio, and is pursuing a B.M. in Vocal Performance at Capital University’s Conservatory of Music. Beaux has performed both nationally and internationally, including venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia. Some of his recent roles include Ralph Rackstraw (HMS Pinafore), Man 1 (Songs for a New World), Roger (A New Brain), and Giuseppe (The Light in the Piazza). Beaux has frequently placed in state and local voice competitions, including first place in the CL 8 category at NATS Ohio Chapter. He serves as a tenor section leader and co-president in the Capital University Chapel Choir and co-founded the vocal chamber ensemble, Luces Stellarum, which recently coached with The King’s Singers. Additionally, Beaux serves as the tenor choral scholar at Christ Anglican Church, and works with professional organizations such as Opera Columbus, Opera Project Columbus, and Westerville Symphony. Beaux Baldwin studies with Dr. Chad Payton.

Lucas Barnard is a 3rd year Vocal Music Education Major. This is his second production in Capital University’s Opera/Musical Theatre department with “No One Is Alone”being his previous credit. In addition to this, he is a member of the Chapel Choir, Symphonic Winds, Philomel, and Trombone Choir. Lucas currently studies voice under both Dr. Tammi Regensburger and Professor Chelsea Melcher.

🎉 Meet the Cast: Jacob Jones, Simone 🎉

Jacob Jones, bass, is a 4th year Vocal Performance major at Capital University and this is his second production with the Opera/Musical theatre Department. Outside Capital he is an active member of the Barbershop Harmony Society singing bass in his own quartet named Motion to JAAM. He also is a section leader at Prince of Prince Lutheran Church in Dublin, as well as teaching general music at Circleville Juvenile Correctional Facility. Jacob currently studies voice under Dr. Tammi Regensburger.

Caitlin Witt, mezzo-soprano, is a Junior Vocal Music Education major. Her recent productions include No One Is Alone with Capital University’s Opera/Musical Theatre department and Vignettes: Ellis Island. She is a member of Capital University’s Philomel and Chapel Choir in which she is the alto section leader. She is also a member of OCMES and ACDA in which she is secretary. Caitlin currently studies voice under both Dr. Tammi Regensburger and Professor Chelsea Melcher.
