Established in 1981 by the late Royston Nash, former Music Director of London's D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, it provided a group of talented professional musicians a local alternative to community orchestras. Symphony by the Sea presented its inaugural concert at the Peabody Essex Museum in June 1981. The Symphony by the Sea experience is different from the large orchestra experience. This Chamber
Orchestra has its own special niche poised to present nuanced performances in its new venue at Beverly’s beautifully restored, historic Cabot Theater, a perfect match for an ensemble of typically 35 to 40 musicians. As resident orchestra of the Cabot, Symphony by the Sea has, at last, found its home. Under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Donald Palma, Symphony by the Sea will continue an established tradition of presenting a wide range of classics from Baroque to Contemporary. In response to the enthusiasm generated by last season’s programming, Maestro Palma, who serves on the faculty of Boston’s New England Conservatory and the Yale College of Music, will open the 2017-2018 season with Latin Grammy winner, pianist Pablo Ziegler, joining forces with Symphony by the Sea for a tantalizing program of tangos by Astor Piazzolla and others. The season continues with Bernstein and Beethoven: A Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth, followed by Mozart/Tchaikovsky: Love at First Hearing. Again, Maestro Palma will offer brief commentary from the podium. For over 36 years, Symphony by the Sea has brought an outstanding array of soloists to its stage including such celebrated artists as Pamela Frank, Stephanie Chase and Paula Robison, as well as members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. To our credit, our subscription series concerts have regularly featured emerging young artists such as Stefan Jackiw and Augustin Hadelich, who have gone on to headline performances at Carnegie Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall and Tanglewood Music Festival to name a few notable venues. Symphony by the Sea is committed to introducing young people to the world of classical music. As part of an Education and Outreach Initiative, classroom visits and school concerts can be arranged. Our Cabot concerts are also family friendly. Symphony by the Sea is in the process of expanding its Board, its reach and its outreach. As a not-for-profit organization run entirely by volunteers to support professional musicians, Symphony by the Sea would value the gift of the your time, your expertise and your financial support.
