Discovered

Discovered I want to inspire others to tell their stories, because I know how healing it is, and to support a woman's ability to transform the world in a REAL way.

A Solo Show by writer/performer Dufflyn Lammers

Directed by Jake Smith

DISCOVERED was nominated for a Duende Award in it's debut performance at the Hollywood Fringe Festival WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT:

This show is the culmination of 14 years in recovery, 11 years as a career consultant for actors, 10 years holding boundaries as an ex-codepedant, 7 years studying spirituality through physical connecti

on, 8 years of daily meditation and 6 years being a mental health coach. We all know the struggle, this is about how to turn it into hope, forgiveness, and even success! LOGLINE:

The hilarious Hollywood-by-way-of-the-Deep-South story of a daughter who became an actor to win her mother’s love only to discover the one thing she had to do to succeed was stop acting. WHAT IS IT?

“Discovered” is a poetic, comedic, autobiographical solo show written and performed by Dufflyn Lammers. In this fearlessly personal tour-de-force, she explores addiction, identity, family history, and the ultimate truth of unconditional love. STORYLINE:

Dufflyn grows up desperate for Mama’s attention and confused by her skewed—but entertaining— version of reality. At the unlikely age of thirty-two Dufflyn breaks free and sets out for Hollywood to pursue the same grandiose dreams Mama was after, but she actually has some success! As she builds her career she struggles with her own demons—vanity, addiction, insecurity— but ultimately realizes the greatest obstacle she faces is her mother and the person she has been pretending to be in order to please her. It is the craft of acting itself that teaches her in the end that the one thing any good actor must first be able to play is herself.

Today is and while I don't love that we need to have one, I am taking the opportunity to celebrate the women in my life. Starting with my mother. She grew up in Georgia in the 1940's and married young, had 3 children by the time she was 18 years old, and fought like hell all her life. My father was her second husband and when she left him, to finally pursue her own dreams, I felt like she'd left me too. Writing about her in my one woman show DISCOVERED I put myself in her shoes and I gained a level of forgiveness by understanding her position in the world--woman to woman. Then I performed an excerpt of my show for SHE RECOVERS in Los Angeles for 600 women. They felt me. They heard me. And again, I was healed even more deeply. This is what international women's day is about for me. Unity. We are, always have been, and always will be Let's lift each other up, even when we have differences. Even when we have been hurt by each other. Reach out to each other and heal those wounds. We need each other, today and every day.

The transformative experience of art has healed me more than any other work I have done in my recovery. What is most astounding to me about that is that I could not have done it alone--it requires the participation of others--directors, sound engineers, make up artists, and not least of all an audience.

There is a magical thing that happens in performance where an audience joins with an artist to go on a journey. And in that process there is alchemy. I am so grateful to each and every woman who saw this live and I want to share it with you here with the intention to continue that.

This is an excerpt from my one woman show DISCOVERED, as performed at the She Recovers Gala in September of 2018 and titled "We Are All Recovering From Something." If you feel inspired please share in the comments a bit about your own recovery-- from grief, addiction, divorce, loss, codependency, cancer, or simply the human condition.

We do recover. And we are

Today I gave an Elephant a bath in a river, fed her, and walked with her. What majestic creatures. At Elephant Nature Park they are cared for properly rather than being ridden or expected to do dangerous tricks for food and beaten into submission. They are loved— so they are loving in return—not unlike how humans work!

These two adorable humans are monks at the Temple on the mountain. They were holding hands and all of them together walking down the stairs. Inside the temple you can get a blessing where they pray over you and sprinkle some holy water on you and then tie a little bracelet around your wrist. Today I am blessed 🙏🏻

“Failure teaches a man (or woman) to succeed” sign at the temple spoke to me. Teaching about resilience is one of my greatest joys and I know we become stronger through experience: Horomesis.

My work is to be. To be the one who listens to the church bells, and the tapping of the hammer, and the way my lover’s voice drops when holidays are canceled. My work is to hear what is not being said and give a voice to it. My work is hanging on your every gesture because this is where you tell your secrets.
My work is knowing when compassion is all you need, and when to hold up the mirror and let you see for yourself what you have been up to. My work is looking into my own mirror, to see the malingering way old patterns try to butt in like an old woman cutting in line at the grocery store. This is the way it’s always been. Who are you to tell me?

my work is always to listen. To know that listening is an act of love. My work is to hold my tongue until just the right moment. And then to speak the words that come from some other place that I will never remember, that cuts my fingers and glues my dreams together.
My work is to remember who I am. My work is to arrest every tendency to be other than what I am. My work is to let you be who you are. This may be all that it is. But then, my work is to provide a container for what is.
My work is to feel the beauty in my bones. To let light in. My work is to fight for love, even if it means you leave me. My work is to tell you the truth about yourself to your face. And then dry your tears. My work is to let it all go at the end.
My work is sacred.

Moving to Paris has taught me so much about who I am in the world and the lenses we all look at each other through: race, nationality, gender, class. Underneath it all we are each of us simple humans. I am reminded being back here that I will always be a California girl, through and through, but how can I see myself each day anew? And then how can I see the world through a different lens, one I’d never even imagined could exist?
