P.O.L. (Person of Leisure) Adventures

P.O.L. (Person of Leisure) Adventures Not defined by your 9 to 5 job or work? Like to have fun? Discover new places? Find adventure? Even in your own backyard? You just may be a p.o.l.... yourself? P.O.L.

WHAT IS A "PERSON OF LEISURE"? Ten years ago, a friend of mine's sister told me about how the company she worked for basically paid her to work from home allowing her to do what she wanted when she wanted. She called herself a "person of leisure". Nice concept I thought. I also liked the sound of that moniker too. As the natural born entrepreneur in me already related to this idea of not being tie

d to a desk 9 to5 (I’m currently a small business owner and haven’t worked a 9 to 5 desk job since 1998), I quickly adopted this concept as my own and over time and turned and expanded that "person of leisure" moniker into a MINDSET. A mindset many whom I've met over the years eagerly wish to adopt themselves but often don't know how or where to start. Who DOESN'T want to be a "person of leisure" right? In simple terms, to me, a "person of leisure" or “p.o.l”, is someone who is not defined by their 9 to 5, someone who may not even have a 9 to 5 job, but consistently makes time to have fun, enjoy life and appreciate even the most simplest of pleasures. Most importantly, a p.o.l. can find adventure right in their own backyard. Sound interesting? Want to put the wheels in motion to becoming a p.o.l. Well you can - you need only to have a desire to have fun and experience new and interesting places, do new things and be willing to make the time to make it happen. ADVENTURES

So this is what p.o.l adventures is about - giving others inspiration to have a little fun, a little adventure - on a weekly and monthly basis. I'll be posting p.o.l. adventures I take - some will be planned weeks/months in advance - others will be impromptu events. Some of these adventures will be titled "Huellventures" - daytrips inspired by the California's own, Huell Howser, and his California's Gold, Road Trips with Huell Howser and Visiting with Huell Howser series. Huell never ceases to find amazing, interesting and historic things to see and do, right here in our own backyard. He has 25+ years of adventures to pull from so we'll never run out of unique places to visit! If you've read this far, can relate to what I'm saying (or at least find the idea of being a p.o.l intriguing) and you now have an uncontrollable urge to find a new, less stressful job or jump in your car and drive to the nearest historic roadside diner or plan a trip to the nearest national park, perhaps you have what it takes to become a p.o.l :)

I'm not sure where this is all going to go - who knows, perhaps this will inspire legions of fans and followers all around the country and world :) But in the meantime, I invite you to post your own p.o.l stories, experiences, tips, comments and of course photos of yourself (and fellow p.o.l friends) out and about, living up the p.o.l lifestyle. There's a big, wonderful world out there but adventure can literally be found just around the corner....

Many of these may be familiar (have done many myself over the years) but just as many I've never heard of. That's what wonderful but LA - you can find something new to do or somewhere new to visit literally every day of the year and still not see it all. Check out the list. Feel free to post any other interesting places or things to do not on the list in the comments.

Go out? In this economy? We get it, and we’re with you. But the city's vibrant offerings still beckon — and many of them can be experienced for less than an Erewhon Malibu Mango Smoothie.

Just watched Stephen Colbert’s final guest on The Late Show, Sir Paul McCartney. Remember the one time I saw Paul in the wild (have seen Paul twice in concert) - when he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame back in 2012. So cool that Paul is still with us, still rockin’ and was the perfect final guest to shut the lights on the old Ed Sullivan theater where he, John, George and Ringo fist stood some 62 years ago. He even gave Stephen a large framed photos of The Beatles from that first performance. Bittersweet end to a storied institution.

Sadly, I just now discovered Ann Robinson, most famous for her role in the 1953 sci-fi classic, War of the Worlds, passed away last year (the family did not publicly reveal the news until now.) She 96 years old.

Not only did I get to meet Ann, I got to tell her we both had something in common - we both were directed by Steven Spielberg and even better, that movie was War of the Worlds, his remake of the classic 1953 version she originally starred in (I literally had just worked as an extra on the movie earlier that year). I grew up watching the original classic so it was great to meet Ann the same year we both worked on the remake (I would meet her co-star Gene Barry 2 years later:)
